This paper mainly focuses on the characteristics of synonyms in Legal English since Legal English is a practical interdisciplinary subject combining legal science and English linguistics and it is one of the most important branches of ESP (English for Specific Purposes). Legal English has formed its unique style in legislation, administration, judicature and litigation, aiming at fixed groups. The use and selection of synonyms has unique requirements for the special role of Legal English. This paper will illustrate the characteristics of synonyms in Legal English with examples of United Nations Security Council in 2018.
