1. 研究目的与意义(文献综述)
the history of translation as an independent discipline is very short , and various translation theories and techniques are emerging and intricate. there is no widely acknowledged and unified theory for translation. therefore, many scholars want to provide some criteria for translation from the perspective of other theories. verschueren's adaptation theory points out that the process of using language is a process of selection, which provides a new perspective for the translation of chinese classical literature. many scholars apply the adaptation theory to the field of translation, and the adaptation theory is also applied to the translation of chinese traditional culture. however, there are few translations of chinese traditional costumes. clothing can reflect the culture of a region to a certain extent. therefore, for the study of the clothing translation in a dream of red mansions, the adaptation theory will provide a lot of new ideas and usher a new era, whether it is in the development of the adaptation theory itself, or traditional chinese clothing translation.
in 1999, verschueren put forward the theory of adaptation for the first time, arguing that the use of language is deemed as a dynamic selection process, which provides a number of clear and systematic methods and are mainly composed of four parts: contextual correlates of adaptability, structural objects of adaptability, dynamics of adaptability and the salience of the adaptation processes.
many linguists, like bolinger (1986), fretheim and rudzka-ostyn emphasize the components of language. there are a number of other people, like kurzon, markov, and foppa began to consider the dynamics of adaptability of language use. in other words, they study the internal adaptation in the process of language use, but these studies are rarely used in english translation, especially in the translation of chinese traditional culture.
2. 研究的基本内容与方案
in order to provide more references for the translation of traditional culture and investigate the translation techniques and theories applied in a dream of red mansions, this paper will use verschueren’s adaptation theory to analyze the attire translation in a dream of red mansions(take yang-xianyi’s version as an example)which will provide a new framework for the study of pragmatics and expands the perspective of translation studies.
the main content of the paper includes two parts. the first part consists of three sections, which apply specific examples to further analyze the attire translations in a dream of red mansions that are in accordance with the adaptation theory from the perspective of accessories translation, various types of clothing, as well as the translation of materials. the second part concludes the importance and influence of yang xianyi’s version as well as the paper.
in order to get more specific analysis, the paper will adopt rational deductive methods, inductive methods as well as the quantitative methods to analyze the source language and the target language. the paper will collect a large number of english translations of clothing and chinese source language from a dream of red mansions. through the compare and contrast of the source language and target language, the paper will analyze the translation strategies of traditional attire from the perspective of adaptation theory.
