An Analysis of Feminism in To the Lighthouse
1 Introduction
- Woolf and To the Lighthouse
To the Lighthouse is an autobiographical novel of Woolf. The scene of the story was set in the seaside town where Woolf lived in her childhood. The author used three chapters to record two days in the Ramsey family's daily life, which were ten years apart. Ten years had taken away some people and brought some changes to the living. The first chapter is about the ordinary day in the daily life of the Ramsey family: the youngest son wanted to go to the lighthouse, but his father stopped the plan because of the bad weather. In the seemingly disordered description, the reader understands the character characteristics of the Ramsey family, such as the depression and sternness of Mr. Ramsey, the kindness and gentleness of Mrs. Ramsey, which also foreshadows the author's attempt to expose the differences between the two sexes. In the second chapter, there were only a few lines, summarizing the great changes of the Ramsey family in the following ten years. The third chapter returned to the main line of the story, describing that one day ten years later, the Ramsey family finally arrived at the lighthouse. It is worth noting that the once stern father seems to be gentle, and the atmosphere between the two sexes is relaxed and harmonious. To the Lighthouse is the most typical literary expression of Woolf 's feminist thoughts. In this work, Woolf reveals the living conditions of women in Victorian times, revealing Woolf 's strong desire for the rise of women 's status. In the 1920 s, Woolf is suppressed by the traditional patriarchy in the literature of social political, economic and cultural system has carried on the bold and critical reflection, strongly advocates people use female Angle of view to re-examine the history of mankind, creating a new civilization, eventually makes human get rid of the contradiction between men and women, to both sexes. This view is fully reflected in To the Lighthouse. Woolf 's comprehensive, rich and profound feminist thought finally exerted a great influence on western feminists since the 1960s. To the Lighthouse is a sign of Woolf 's feminist maturity and an autobiographical literary work. The images of Woolf 's parents and herself are presented artistically through the works of Mr.Ramsey, his wife and lily. Through shaping the characters, the author depicts the profound expose and reflects on the traditional patriarchy society, which decided by male center socialist consciousness in men 's and women 's level of binary opposites of the status quo, and with the social situation of the deformity boldly she puts forward the solution of the individual and the unique insights and the different ideas to feminism writing and thinking .
1.2 Background of To the Lighthouse
Woolf 's mother died when she was 13 years old. Her description of her mother's image remained in her mind all the time. Her words and deeds, every move, her hobbies, her living habits, all lingered in Woolf 's mind, leaving her a deep memory. At the age of twenty-two, Woolf 's father died, and her father's image remained in her mind forever. It is this kind of deep image that makes her very entangled and has been bothering her. So, in order to express the image of her father and mother and her emotion clearly, she decided to write a novel. The two main characters in To the Lighthouse are Mrs. Ramsey and Mr. Ramsey's parents. As Woolf wrote the novel, she gradually recovered her health. In the process of her creation, she expressed her feelings to her heart's content, spread out all the memories stored in her mind for many years, and created it at the fastest highest speed. This kind of creation is not happy and incomparable with the previous creation. In To the Lighthouse, many different characters are created. In addition to Mrs. Ramsey and Mr. Ramsey, there are Lily, James, Kem, Roger and so on. These different characters have appeared in Woolf 's life, and they have all kinds of connections and intersections with her.
1.3Literature Review
Virginia Woolf is one of the greatest writers in English literature and a pioneer of feminism in the 20th century. As early as the 1930s and 1940s, domestic scholars introduced Woolf 's works to Chinese readers and foreign studies on Woolf 's works were even earlier. With the development of the feminist liberation movement and the rise of women 's consciousness of freedom and equality, Woolf 's works have been reread and analyzed again and again. Her works not only reflect the understanding and reflection of women 's realistic situation, but also put forward the solution of women 's self-liberation and self-realization by revealing the source of female role repression under the patriarchal system.
