从生态翻译学视角评析《我和我的祖国》的英文字幕翻译毕业论文

摘 要

近年来,中国有许多高质量的影视剧被引到国外市场,体裁涉及古装剧到文艺片再到纪录片。2019年,国家广播电影电视总局重点支持反映中国价值观和中华民族伟大复兴的影视剧走出国门,在海外主流平台播出。而英文字幕的质量对其在国外市场上的接受度和知名度有着至关重要的影响。

本文旨在从生态翻译学的角度对电影《我和我的祖国》的英文字幕进行研究。本文案例研究将从语言、文化、交际层面展开,从而判断这部电影的英文字幕是否能够满足“达意”的标准和传播中国文化的期待。

Abstract

In recent years, many high-quality Chinese films and TV plays have been introduced into foreign markets, with themes ranging from costume plays to literary films to documentary films. In 2019, State Administration of Radio, Film and Television focused on supporting films and television shows that reflect Chinese values and the great rejuvenation of China to go abroad and broadcast on overseas mainstream platforms. The quality of English subtitles has a crucial impact on their recognition and popularity in foreign markets.

This paper attempts to study Chinese and English subtitles of the film My People, My Country from the perspective of Eco-translatology. The case study in this thesis will be arranged from linguistic, cultural, communicative dimensions, so as to make judgments whether the English subtitle of the film can meet the standard of expressing meaning exactly and the expectation of spreading Chinese culture.

On Subtitle Translation of My People, My Country from the Perspective of Eco-translatology

1 Introduction

Research Background

The 20th century witnessed the rise of China. It has become the world second largest economy, so the economic strength of China is self-evident. Besides, soft power of culture is also an important part of national competitiveness. In 2019, China's cultural trade maintained steady and rapid development. The export of cultural products reached 99.89 billion US dollars.

Meanwhile, the international influence of China's film and television plays has significantly increased. Research shows that Chinese film and television works is the most important factor for foreigners to learn Chinese culture. In countries along the Belt and Road, they account for 23.5% and 19.6% in developed countries. In fact, the demand for Chinese film and television shows in foreign countries has come to the front of export supply.

Moreover, in 2019, State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) focused on supporting films and television shows to go abroad and broadcast on overseas mainstream platforms. SARFT plans to produce 100 works in the next 5 years that reflect Chinese values, the essence of Chinese traditional culture and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Subtitle translation plays an important role in film and TV series. The accuracy of subtitle translation affects the expression of plot, the shaping of characters and the output of cultural values. Surveys show that many foreigners who are interested in Chinese films consider the subtitle an obstacle. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the interactive choices made by translators to adapt to the ecological environment in the process of subtitle translation of My People, My Country from the perspective of Eco-translatology, and to provide suggestions or lessons for the practice of subtitle translation of Chinese films.

Research Purpose and Significance

Films with Chinese characteristics have received a lot of public attention in recent years. They vividly reveal China and Chinese culture from various aspects. My People, My Country was released on September 30, 2019- the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. It is not only a film of dedication to our beloved motherland, but also a love letter full of our sincere emotions. In this movie, audience was led to review the 70 years of extraordinary times in New China, so that they can deeply understand the connection under bones and blood between “I” and “China”. This film was also released in Australia, the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Spain and Japan. Therefore, it is an important task for subtitle translators to do well in the translation work.

This paper aims to evaluate the subtitle translation of My people, My country under the guidance of Eco-translatology. This thesis studied how translator’s subjectivity is manifested in different dimensions according to Eco-translatology. Meanwhile, it also aims to provide suggestions for subtitle translation of the audiovisual products, especially those tended to enter foreign markets.

Research Procedure

Firstly, the material selection has been considered in many aspects. My People, My Country consists of seven parts: The Eve, Passing By, The Champion, Coming Home, Hello Beijing, The Guiding Star and One For ALL. Each tells a story about the connection between common people new China. The film is 158 minutes and is jointly produced by Huaxia Film Distribution Co., Ltd., Bona Film Group Co., Ltd. and Alibaba Film Group Co., Ltd. The subtitle of the film, which is the research object of this paper, is the official subtitle of the official broadcast version. Standing at the point of ordinary people, this film can vividly show the image of China, also the subtitles are also official, so it is optimal to be the research object of this thesis. After the decision of material, this thesis will collect and sort out the corpous, and analyze them under the guidance of Eco-translatology

Structure of the Thesis

This paper is divided into four parts.

The first part is a brief introduction about the whole paper, including the research background, purpose and significance. Then it introduces the research procedure and structure.

The second part is the theoretical framework. This part also has three branches. The first one mainly talks about the main research theory adopted in this paper, Eco-translatology, including its history of development and main points of view. The second one focuses on some important terms involved in Eco-translatology. Combining the theory with subtitle translation, the third part of Part two discusses the development of subtitle translation and the limitations of it.

The third part is case analysis. The author selectes some typical examples from this 158-minute films, and evaluates them according to the categories of language, culture and communication, and makes approval or correction.
