english rhetoric, mainly refers to those rhetorical writing techniques that do not have a relatively fixed format. it has a close relationship with grammar, language structure, and vocabulary. it only makes some adjustments to rhetoric and novelty. for example: in order to increase literary talent and strengthen the expressiveness of the article, it is often avoided to use the same vocabulary repeatedly, and to choose another word. the rhetoric in english has infiltrated various genres and styles.

the popularity of importance of the living in the united states has changed the way the americans originally thought of the chinese and played an important role in spreading the chinese culture to the world. however, foreign research on the book is mainly limited to book reviews, focusing on its positive assessment of the spread of chinese culture to the west and its impact on becoming a bestseller in the united states.therefore, there is less research on rhetoric in this book.

on the contrary, domestically, there are many chinese researchers casting their eyes on the rhetoric research on this book. ding qun(2015), from the shandong agricultural university, based on the wmatrix corpus tool, steen's five-step metaphorical analysis and conceptual metaphor theory, explore the concept of life-related conceptual metaphors in the importance of the living . in this paper, the author put forward three research questions: 1) what is the distribution of conceptual metaphors about life in the importance of the living ? 2) according to lakoff and johnson's conceptual metaphor theory, what are the classifications of these conceptual metaphors? 3) what are the functions of these metaphors? qi zhendong(2009), focus his attention on the western rhetoric in the importance of living

2. 研究的基本内容与方案

This paper aims to study the rhetorical techniques of Lin Yutang's The Importance of Life. This paper will include the following aspects. First of all, the reputation of the Importance of the Living worldwide, which chapters are included in this book, and people's research and views on it. Second, the main rhetorical methods used in this book, and what are the effects of these rhetorical methods . Third, the link between rhetoric using and Lin Yutang's writing style, how these rhetoric devices influence the plot in this book, especially the realization of his aesthetics values. Finally, why did Lin Yutang use these rhetoric methods. What are the differences between the use of these methods western and eastern? Fourth, how these English rhetoric devices are different from the original when translated into Chinese , and thus, what kind of writing style is formed. Lastly, the conclusion of this paper.
