1. Brief introduction to the Sino-US Trade War 2018

The disputes andfrictions cannot be avoided with the closer international exchange, however, neverbefore in history have we come to the stage when the interaction andinterdependence of countries are of much importance. As the advocator and thepractitioner of the shared-fate community, China is always committed to thepeaceful way when encounter the confrontations, while in 2017 United States arbitrarilyinitiated the 301 investigation to China regardless the rules of WTO and ignitedthe line of trade war with the 60 billion dollars tariff in March 2018. Within the same day, China countered back with extra 15%to 25% tariff of seven kinds of commodities that imported from the US includingfruits, nuts, pork, aluminum scrap and etc. That is the beginning of the 2018 Sino-US Trade War and so far it has held seven rounds of high-leveleconomic and trade consultations between China and US.

It is self-evidentthat every move of China and US, the largest two economies in the world, willattract much attention. Last year, mass media at home and aboard followed up wherethis affair would go to with ardor, and consequently, numerous reportsexplored.

2. Significance of the thesis

First of all, as faras the critical linguists concerned, language is closely tied with its nation’sideology and power. Although both the reporters of China and America have thefreedom of expression, the news that publish and disseminate, those on themainstream media in particular, are elaborately sifted by the supervisiondepartment. Therefore, this paper is going to figure out similarities anddiversities of the related reports between China Daily and The Washington Post,the two official windows of the two countries, by which to reveal the differentideologies between the two countries and examine whether their attitudeschanged in the different stages of the war.

Secondly, readingEnglish news is the most universal and effective way for students to acquirethe latest English knowledge. Yet, as mentioned above, not all the news reportcould hold a just and equitable stance in essence. Therefore, from thepractical perspective, this paper, introducing some simple theories about thecritical discourse analysis and taking several cases for practical application, is favorable for the English major, or arguably allstudents to form a habit of critical thinking in this information explorationage.

Thirdly, althoughlanguage is an indispensable component of our daily life, most people deem itwith insufficient importance. This paper hope that the readers could learn moreabout the critical discourse analysis (CDA) and awake their language awareness,then reflect on their diction and pay more attention to word choice, textstructure and organization in future writing.
