basicintroduction to critical discourse analysis
critical discourseanalysis is a new branch of contemporary linguistics research. its methodologyis mainly based on systemic functional linguistics represented by halliday.systemic functional linguistics emphasizes the sociological function of languageand how the function works in practical applications.
cda is designedto discuss the relationship between ideology and power presented in discourse.the method of cda was originally proposed by the british linguist fowler in hisbook "language and control"in 1979. the publication of several important works, including "language and power" (fairclough1989),"language, power, and ideology"(wodak1989), and "prejudice indiscourse" (van dijk1984), marks that the cda theory begins to form asystematic network and gradually grows and develops.
cda emphasizesthe study of social and historical context and focuses on the discovery andanalysis of ideas in seemingly normal discourses which people are so used to thatthey neglect the hidden biases and dont critically think about them.
