1. 研究目的与意义
My topic is The Role of Context in The Study of Pragmatics, which belongs to linguistics study, specifically, it is the integral part of pragmatics. Pragmatics has two basic concepts, one is meaning and the other is context. Pragmatics aims to study understanding and using language, in which context plays an important role. Context helps to understand deixis; comprehend conversational implicature; make out presupposition; perform speech act and analyze discourse structure. In a word, pragmatics study relies on context. Without the study of context, pragmatics study can not be carried out. So my topic aims to analyze the relationship between context and pragmatics and explain the functions of context in detail. Many scholars domestic and overseas have put forward their original view before my study, which is beneficial for me to use their researchers for reference and analyze their views, then I can elucidate this topic comprehensively. Context determines the speaker#8217;s use of language and also the hearer#8217;s interpretation of what is said to him. Without such knowledge, linguistic communication would not be possible, and without considering such knowledge, linguistic communication can not be satisfactorily accounted for in a pragmatic sense. My study can help people avoid mistakes while paying attention to context, whether in daily dialogue or business negotiation, which is beneficial to building a harmonious society.
2. 研究内容和预期目标
this paper elucidates context, pragmatics, and their relationship systematically, then analyzes the function of context in the study of pragmatics from five different aspects: understanding deixis, comprehending conversational implicature, making out presupposition, performing speech act and analyzing discourse structure.
the key problem that this paper solves is what is context? how is context divided? what features does context have? how and why context play an important role in the study of pragmatics?

3. 国内外研究现状
ai jun analyzes category of context under the framework of pragmatics, which includes three parts: context, context of situation, and context of national culture tradition. he also briefly introduces contributions of some professors, for example, linguist b. malinowski divides context into two segments: context of culture and context of situation; professor m.a.k.halliday proposes the term of registers, and so on(艾军 2004:26-28). his study has great significance to me because in my paper, there#8217;s a big part about category of context under the framework of pragmatics so there is no doubt that i use his study for reference.
bai jiehong studies some different interpretations of context and then comes to one point that context may be classified under two types: linguistics and non-linguistics context. the paper discusses the relationship between context and the use of language, and then it explores two major pragmatic function of context(白解红 2000:88-92).
ma dong focuses on the context research in pragmatics. the paper, through the preliminary examination of life-world theories from the context perspective, equates the context of pragmatics to the human being#8217;s life-world and divides the life-world into the outer world, the inner world and the subjective world(马东 2007:89-91). his paper explains the practical significance of my study. he combines theory with reality, which enlighten me a lot that any research, only linked to life, it makes sense, otherwise, meaningless.
