1.introductionrecent years have witnessed a spurt of progress in the development of global communication between china and america. china and america have been playing an important role in a lot of fields such as technology, education and medicine etc. therefore, under the background of frequent exchange in all respects between china and america it is of great necessity for us to pay attention to differences between these two countries. the film sunflower and the film little miss sunshine are both dramatic film which reflect the two totally different cultures in relation to the family values. the film sunflower focuses on the story of father and his son xiang yang. the father came back to beijing from cadre school when xiang yang was at the age of six. the father had been dreaming of becoming a painter for a long time. however, he failed to achieve his dream for some reasons. as a result, he set a clear objective of painter for his son in order to realize his dream. contrary to the expectation of his father, xiang yang was not willing to draw pictures all day long and was in contradiction to his father. as xiang yang got older, he was increasingly unsatisfied with the requirement of his strict father. after graduating from high school, xiang yang did not enter an academy of fine art which failed to achieve the goal set by his father. later xiang yang began to prepare again for the college entrance exam which was required by his father. during these time, xiang yang ran some small business and met a girl named yu hong at houhai. then they fell into love with each other so that yu hong was pregnant with xiang yangs child. without getting permission from xiang yang, the father read the letter wrote by yu hong and took her to end a pregnancy. at the end of 1990s, xiang yang became an artist successfully and got married with another girl named han. when his wife was pregnant with their first child, xiang yang and his wife were not willing to give birth to the child which led to an argument between xiang yang and his father against the abortion. at last, when xiang yang held his personal art exhibition, the father went to the gallery where a painting made him thought-provoking. he started to reflect profoundly on the relationship between himself and xiang yang, and whether his approach to family education was appropriate.in the film little miss sunshine, the main character olive hoover is a girl of seven years old with a spare tire around her waist who also wore a pair of glass. she had been always taking preparation for beauty contest: she had a dream of becoming the miss america in the future. olives daddy richard took firm belief in his nine-step refuse to lose program and marketed his program everywhere. olive s mother sheryl expended all her efforts on the care of home and tried to maintain a harmonious atmosphere in the family which was heading for divorce. olives uncle frank was a professor of psychology who had a disenchanted and frustrated attitude toward the world for the reason that he fell in love with his student who did not love him back and was fired from his job. olives brother dwayne would like to join the air force academy and became a test pilot, so he took a vow of silence until he reached the goal. however, he hated everyone in the life. olives grandpa had been kicked out from the sunset manor due to the addiction to heroin. at the same time, he coached olive for the little miss sunshine contest. in the beginning of this story, olive wanted to join a beauty pageant named little miss sunshine in california. therefore, the whole family made a decision to drive to california from albuquerque. during this journey, the volkswagen station wagon they drove was obsolete and developed engine trouble. meanwhile the business of richard broke up. grandpa passed away because of the heroin overdose. then olives uncle met his old lovers and rival in love at expressway service zone which made him dejected and feel like a loser. dwayne found he was colour-blind by chance so that he was impossible to get admission of the air force academy. although many things happened on the trip, the whole family still supported olive to join the beauty pageant and finally found the significance of life respectively.2.literature reviewit is impossible for people to touch or see values, however, values can direct and guide activities of human beings. every culture has a unique set of value system which influences the way of thinking, preference of choice, attitude towards outside world and standard of evaluation of people. at the same time, value is a model composed of individuals or groups mainly through cultural communication which is a kind of culture existing in the deep mind of individuals. every person has different understanding of the concept of family due to personal cultural background and life experience. it cannot be over stressed that every individual has his own idea in relation to an ideal way of life, so the family life of each person can be a clearly reflection of his value orientation. family values belong to the value system which was firstly put forward by burgess and locke from the sociology. family values can be defined as a common standard of coping with different matters in a family which is formed during the communication and interaction among family members in daily life. it is universally acknowledged that family values have been taken for a large share traditionally in the culture of each country. family values have many origins which can be traced back to the daily behaviors, manners and customs, social morals, marriage ethics and so on. family value is a kind value orientation which lays stress on the mutual support among family members. meanwhile, family values can be defined as an orientation which people are likely to make effort in order to the common benefits of the nuclear family or the whole family. some researchers (burgess, e. w., locke, h. j., thomes, m. m.,1963) held the opinion that family values can be divided into several aspects. for example, family values mean all the members in the family while other people will be left out. at the same time, all the activities of an individual should revolve around the goal of accomplishing family matters. in addition, every family member needs to pay attention to the development of his family means that individual should focus on the raise of offspring, the establishment of new family and economic activities. therefore, family values can be regarded as a cognition of a family and an idea of the relationships among family members. in particular, family values can be considered as family moral values, love values, educational values and so on. generally speaking, the majority of people in every society always handle their family matters according to the family values which they followed.family education falls clearly within the ambit of family values. family education can be considered as a kind of education which family members exert their influence on each other which is always purposeful. among these influences the education from parents to children is of vital importance in family education. it is safe to say that family education runs through the whole life of every family which lays a foundation for the future school education and social education of a child. in the family education, the relationship between parents and children is often supposed to be the core. in domestic studies, some scholars have found that some parents usually concentrate on the academic performance of their children.at the same time, these parents are declined to link the future success with the fame of their family. zeng guofan(2011) once mentioned in the book of zeng guofan family: the prosperity of the family depends on the generation of promising children. if the younger generation is not virtuous or talented, it is of no use for the family to accumulate a great number of silver, money, grain, wealth, clothing and books. therefore, these parents usually focus on giving instruction during the grow of their offspring. according to the studies of effect on the relationship between mother and children conducted by some researchers (hart, j. r. , coates, e. e. , human development,55(2), 57-64.hart, j. r., coates, e. e., 2. 研究的基本内容、问题解决措施及方案
Methods and Procedures of the StudyFirstly,I decided to watch two films carefully. During this process, I took notes at the critical plot. What is more, I surf the Internet to find out information from different sources I need. Then I divided them into different categories. At the same time, I made some summary of some important information in relation to my paper. I also learn from some film criticism websites so that I can better grasp the main idea of two films. Later I compared the similar plots of two films in order to find out the differences of family values between China and America. This article consists of four parts. The first part is a brief introduction of the thesis, and the second part is the research significance of the article. The third part is a comparison and analysis of the differences of family values between China and America. The last part is a brief description of my research methods and conclusions.
