1. 研究目的与意义
Since China has played a more and more important role around the world, a great number of foreigners are willing to come to China as tourists or investors. Therefore, the translation of public signs from Chinese to English is of great significance in leaving them a good impression of China. At the same time, to build international metropolis, many Chinese cities are devoting to create an international language environment for these foreign guests. However, there are still a lot of problems existing in the practical translation of public signs. Most domestic studies of the C-E translation of public signs simply list some general mistakes such as spelling errors and cultural misunderstandings, thus fail to combine the practical functions of the public signs with translation theories. This paper will study the translation of public signs from the perspective of functionalism and will have some intensive researches of the functions and language style of public signs from the perspective of functionalism, and try to prove that the C-E translation of public signs in the light of the functionalism is very important and meaningful.
2. 研究内容和预期目标
Content and Key Question: With different functions of the public signs such as directing, restricting, prompting and compelling, this paper will propose three translation principles including equivalence of the meaning, the intent and the style, and several translation strategies consisting of borrowing, imitation, omission, recreation as well as back translation. Meanwhile, the author will collect a great deal of public signs translation from some public areas and will make a study on them in the light of functionalism. The key question is to prove that translators should follow the functionalism theory in their actual translation process. 3. 国内外研究现状
As early as 1950s, western scholars has started to study the public signs. In China, it is not until the recent two decades that the C-E translation of public signs has been studied . At the very beginning, most scholars researched the topic in a much more simple way which was just to find some general translation mistakes. For example, the earliest study like The Translation Problems of Business Names by Ding Zhengqi and On the Pinyin names of Chinese places by Zeng Shiying in 1989(Pi Demin 2008:131-134). From then on, the study of public signs translation have attracted more and more attention. Especially in the recent decade, because of the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, the Shanghai World Expo in 2010 and the summit of G20 in 2016, the study has been becoming more and more systematic and normative. Many scholars start to examine this topic form some other perspectives. Bei zhu and Shan Aimin(2002:76-79) started to study the function and style of public signs, and they proposed that the most important thing in the translation is not how to translate but to think whether the original text should be translated into English or not because of the great difference of the two cultures. He Xuexun(2006:57-59) concluded several regular types of errors in the public signs translation and proposed several translation strategies. Luo Xuanmin and Li Tuwang(2006: 66-69) worked out that the style of public signs including conciseness, normalization and intertextuality. Dai Zongxian and Lv Hefa(2005:38-42) took the London Olympic Games for an example and studied the function and language style of the public signs. In contrast with the studies above, Li Shujie and FangLei(2008:25-28) started adapted the theory of functionalism in the C-E translation of public signs. They proposed that the translation version should share the same function and context with the resource text. According to the three translation rules (fidelity, coherence and purposiveness) from Hans Vermeer #8217;s Skopostherie , they proposed three translation strategies in the translation of public signs.
