2. 文献综述
in the process of globalization, people from all the countries interact more and more closely. however, there is a great difference between their cultures, such as religion, social norms, values and behaviors. people from different cultural backgrounds cannot avoid cultural distinctions when they are engaged in communications. so in the foreign exchange, it is impossible for people who do not know foreign cultures to use foreign language for effective communications. however, traditional foreign language teachingin chinaputs more emphasis on the form of languages and less on cultural factors, which made students lack intercultural communication competence. nowadays we have the deep understanding that if we want to use foreign languages for intercultural communications, it is necessary to comprehend foreign cultures, experience the chinese and foreign culture differences, and improve our own intercultural communication competence.
edward t. hall who is considered as the father of intercultural communication used the term intercultural communicationfirst time with his publication of the silent language in 1959. he said (1959), intercultural communication refers to the communication that takes place between people fromdifferent cultural backgrounds or people who have different cultural beliefs, values or behaviors.there are two main ways for people to havecommunications, which are calledverbal communication and non-verbal communication. the integration of these two ways constitutes a complete human communication system. to succeed in intercultural communication, people should not only possess basic language ability, but also have cognitive ability of social culture which is part of non-verbal communication. if both sides of the communication do not know the culture of the other countries, just from their own cultural background, they will certainly fail. therefore, we should pay attention to cultivating studentsintercultural communication competence in the process of english learning.
zhao xianzhou (1992), an expert who studies chinese teaching in foreign language, said: the reason why intercultural communication became possible is that human beings enjoy some common cultural information; and the reason why intercultural communication causes deviations is because the two sides can not share some of the different information.intercultural communication is a field of study that emphasizes how people who come from different cultural backgrounds devote to communicate and interact. since 1960s, with the rise of sociolinguistics and the development of language, the theory of intercultural communication arose at the historic moment. more and more foreign researchers have intensified their researches on intercultural communication, and many universities in the united states have begun to establish intercultural communication courses. in recent years, many scholars in china also began to study the impact of intercultural communication on english teaching, such as vocabulary, speaking and listening.the study of intercultural communication in vocabulary, speaking and listening of english teaching has matured. however, author believes that it also has a great influence on english reading teaching, because every part of english teaching has a commonality.
