An internal-external assessment approach to the retrospective evaluation of college non-English-major textbooks(基于内外评价模式对大学非英语专业英语教材的回顾性评估研究)开题报告

1.1 the aim of this research

this research aims to evaluate two sets of textbooks that has used in whut for non-english learners, and determine if these textbooks fit both the students’ and teachers’ needs, and if there are some improvement to make in the future.

2. 研究的基本内容与方案

for this research,several questions should be answered. for teachers, whether the impact of changing textbooks affect on teachers' teaching and secondly their views on the chosen passages and exercises. as for the students, whether these sets of textbooks are suitable for non-english learners; whether the matching exercises of different textbooks can meet the needs of students in learning english and whether there is room for further improvement through interviews with students and an assessment of the teaching materials.

after consulting with a couple of college students on non-english majors, through the investigation, it is found that the english teaching materials used by different grade students are not consistent.. all non-english major students will spend two years (a total four semesters) to study english, but the current situation of college education in china determines that students of different grades use different versions of textbook, witch leads to lack of consistency. for senior students, the textbook they used for the last two years was new college english integrated course by li yinhua and wang deming (second edition), and for the current junior, they used new horizon college english by zheng shutang (third edition).

in this research, several methods will be used. first use the evaluation technique of mcdonough and shaw (2003) and evaluate these two sets on both external and internal levels. secondly several short interviews will be required. there will be at least four of the students to be interviewed which comes from different majors (art or science) and genders (male and female). and in order to be thorough, there will be an interview on one of the english teachers who teaches both sets of the textbooks.

before 1st january: determine the subject (direction) of the study and draw up the title of the paper;

before 1st march: write the outline and determine the thinking of the research;

before 15th april: complete the writing of the first draft of the paper;
