fitzgerald, f. scott, 1896-1940, a legendary figure of the 1920s, has been widely regarded as the literary spokesman of the jazz age. short as life is, he left behind over one hundred and sixty short stories and four great novels, this side of paradise, the beautiful and the damned, tender is the night and the great gatsby. he was a beautiful writer, an observant artist, and an exceptional craftsman.

the great gatsby was a classic literature work of the”lost generation” writer. having witness the cruelty of war, the ”lost generation”, epitomized by three female images, were confronted with the bankrupt of the traditional morality, forgot where their original spirit is and indulged themselves in blind pursuit of sensual pleasures. the awakening of self-sense called for revolution, but patriarchal society obstructed the process. in order to obtain wealth, women of different classes behaved differently.
this research will analyzed the images of female characters in the book as well as their values in the context of epochal background. the attitudes towards parasitism will be compared between daisy and jordan. the thesis is aimed at exposing the influence of that times and the inner struggle of the characters which in verse reveals common values of the ”lost generation”, thus enabling readers to appreciate the lost generation works with more profound perspectives.
