1. 研究目的与意义(文献综述)
nowadays china is facing anew era and "one belt, one road" initiative encourages activeintegration into the development of the world, through various countries'economic, trade, cultural, and regional integration. the “belt and road”, whichdraws on china’s rich cultural resources and exports cultures that are popularwith foreigners, is also becoming an effective channel for chinese culture to“go out”. the chinese culture, based on the “going out” strategy, spreadsabroad. the china documentary developmentresearch report 2018 pointed out that domestic documentary films havecontinued to grow substantially in the past year, with an annual total outputvalue exceeding 6.026 billion yuan. the indirect economic and social benefitsbrought about by the documentary industry are even more immeasurable. theseries of documentaries a bite of chinaand the forbidden city ere broadcasted continuously in the countries alongthe "belt and road" and received constant acclaim from foreignaudiences. by watching china's excellent documentary, foreign audiences canexperience china with an open, inclusive, and innovative view. therefore, chinese documentaries go abroad to provide chinese culture an activeexploration for “going out”.
skopos theory is aconcept from the field of translation studies. it focuses on translation as anactivity with an aim or purpose, and on the intended addressee or audience ofthe translation. it was established by the german linguists hans vermeer and katharinareiszlig; and comprises the idea that translating and interpreting shouldprimarily take into account the function of the target text.
paul kussmaul(1995)explains this theory as: "the functionalapproach has a great affinity with skopos theory. the function of a translationdepends on the knowledge, expectations, values and norms of the target readers, who are again influenced by the situation they are in and by the culture. thesefactors determine whether the function of the source text or passages in thesource text can be preserved or have to be modified or even changed.”(paul1995)
2. 研究的基本内容与方案
Basing on the Skopos Theory, this papertakes Masters in the Forbidden City as an example to explore the translation skills in translating Chinesecharacteristic words of documentary films. Studying the translation skills inChinese documentary films can help us share our unique culture to the worldwell. Thepaper will be divided into three parts, respectively introduction of SkoposTheory, documentary subtitle translation and analysis the translation skills of Masters in the Forbidden City. Inpart one this paper will introduce the definition of Skopos Theory and thecurrent studies of Skopo Theory. In part two the paper will mainly focus on thetranslation of documentary subtitle. In part three some examples will be chosenfrom the documentary and the translation skills used in the translation will beanalyzed. Part 3 is the most important part. And in the documentary Masters in the Forbidden City there aremany vocabularies with Chinese characteristics such as “incised and filled-inwith black lacquer” and “Meridian Gate” so the paper will mainly focus on thetranslation skills of Chinese unique vocabularies. The reason why I chooseSkopos Theory as a direction of Chinese documentary translation is that ourtarget audiences are not familiar with Chinese culture and our purpose is to makethem understand. There are ten basic translation skills including amplification, omission, conversion, division and combination, affirmative and negativetranslation, inversion, embedding, inserting, recasting, and induction. Thispaper will use the ten basic translation skills to analyze the subtitletranslation of “Masters in the Forbidden City”. Previously, there are people combineSkopos Theory with translation strategies to study the subtitle translation ofmovies or TV series. This paper will combine Skopos Theory with translationskills to study the subtitle translation of Chinese documentaries. At present,China's opening up to the outside world is still in full swing. We must notonly export our technology and capital, but also show our Chinese culture tothe world and show our "cultural confidence" .The English version of"A Bite of China" has made the world aware of Chinese cuisine, butthe current translated versions of Chinese documentaries are very limited. Weshould let more excellent Chinese documentaries go to the world.
