1. 研究目的与意义(文献综述)
edgar allen poe, for a long time after hisdeath, remained the most disputable and severely misunderstood literary figurein the field of american literature. written in an eccentric, gothic andfantasized style, the villain-looked man with a miserable wason the diatribe in his time when the main stream of literature wastranscendentalism. till 20th century, the thriving symbolism school, aiming atwriting pure poems, establishes the great reputation of poe. though few chineseliterary critics comment on poe, cultural value of his work maintains vitalityand the unknown parts of his work are worthy of exploration. poe was theforerunner of detective story with a highly-polished style, was a master ofshort stories, and was unique in poetry creation. especially the beauty, namedas annabel lee, ulalume or lenore , died ofnatural or man-made disasters ,was often mourned in a series of poems tinted ina dreamy, hallucinatory color.
appreciating the poems written by edgar allen poe thatcrosses the boundary between literature and linguistics, the scholars all overthe world explored it from many perspectives. but over the past five years, due to the thriving literary circles, manyresearchers start to analyze his work with cross-disciplinary methods. theoverseas researches about poems and short stories of edgar allen poe recentlyare very inspiring. one of them representatively ponder the psychologicalconsequences between the early death of the poet's mother and female charactersin his stories by means of freudian theory (obaid, 2016), which further thestudy of poe in psychology. and scholars also search for extraterrestrialbeauty in his poems (simovic. s, 2016).luckily, domestic scholars’ studiesflourish on it. in the part of its translation, and redemption of his cosmologyand artistic view(曹明伦,2009) the latest chinese version of manypoems come to readers (曹明伦, 2016). also, the meditation on his deathmotif, beauty images and horrible effects, sometimes compared with ancientchinese poetry, expands the study. (任翔,2011).in addition, owing to the poe’s distinctive philosophy of beauty a, a number ofthem study on it in terms of aestheticism, poe’s aesthetic interest (朱振武,2014). besides, modernist mental crises (朱振武,2010)seem to be predicted by poe. last but not least, his unique space writing was discussed(舒凌鸿,2018)from the "spatial practices","the representations of space"and "spaces of representation"of his poetry, which spurs me to probe into the basisof his space from cognitive level.
the innovation part of the paper is that it sees the cognitivefield of poe’s poem is still beyond exploration and utilizes the perspective ofimage schemata to analyze recurring schemas in his poems. progress of cognitivepsychology and cognitive linguistics paves way for literature analysis. imageschema ,as an important concept of cognitive linguistics, according to markjohnson , is a recurring, dynamic pattern of our perceptualinteractions and motor programs that gives coherence and structure to ourexperience.(johnson,1987)thepaper aims to apply the image schemas defined by johnson, like containmentschemas (johnson,1987) to poe’s poems. for example , in “annabel lee”, narrator’s beloved was “in her tomb by theside of the sea”(曹明伦,2013) ,whichhints the sealed image. some similar patterns are also found in other poems ofpoe. thanks to george lakeoff, mark johnson and li fuyin, the chinese professorwho publish the elucidation of image schemata. hence, the image schemata, formed by metaphor, primary codes for us to understand and grasp theorganization of a poem, are accessible to literary studies,
