A Comparative Study of Values Between China And America From Movie Kung Fu Panda
1.Introduction
As the world develops, globalization has accelerated the flow of cultural communications. But globalization is also a two-edged sword. The negative side of it is the increased opportunities of conflicts in cultural exchanges. Different people of differnet countries have different views even towards the same thing. Thus, mutual impacts between the Eastern and Western cultures, America and China in particular, are beginning to be recognized as a fundamental force directing the international life pattern. Intercultural communication is essentially a social process and values such as individualism and collectivism play an important role in it.
The individualism-collectivism dichotomy is an important element to understand the American and Chinese cultures, because it tells a major difference between the two cultures. Therefore an understanding of the individualism or collectivism of another culture helps to learn from others#8217; strong points to offset one#8217;s weakness.
This part generally includes three parts, the background of the research, the significance of the research and the organization of the research.
1.1 Research background
The collectivism and individualism dimension has been used widely when talking about the differences of China and America. Chinese collectivism is the moral stance or social outlook that emphasizes the interests of the whole group. While the individualism is on the contrary. It stresses the role of any one individual.
This thesis is aimed at exploring the root causes and the influences. As for the causes, there are too many to research on. For example, from the perspective of the country#8217;s culture, China has been affected by Confucian culture for a long time, which emphasizes the role of the whole group. However, America was affected by the thinkers of ancient Greek, who believed that everyone is a separate entity. Moreover, this study is also concerned with the current value orientation of Chinese college students. The author hope it will be helpful when they establish their value orientations.
