A Cross-cultural Study of Marriage--Based on The Graduated

1. Introduction

With the development of Chinese comprehensive national power, the United States established in close relationship with China as a represent of western culture. But there are many differences between Chinese and American social relations, values and moral standards, social customs and social etiquette. In cross-cultural communication, it is difficult to form an equal cross-cultural communication due to cultural barriers, which leads to the failure of cross-cultural communication and the soft power of Chinese culture. Therefore, the study of cultural differences, the study of the correct cross-cultural communication has become an issue that can not be ignored. Marriage is a part of social culture, it is necessary for us to study the differences between China and the United States to solve the cultural differences arising from the contradictions.

1.1 Research background

When I heard the title of the film The Graduated at the first time, I thought it was act like the most American youth campus, students have problems of soul or mission of inspiration, counter attack for the campus influential man. But after reading, I found that this is not the case, it makes me have a deeper understanding of the word "Graduated". At the beginning of the film, Benjamin is a good performance of students who have richer family and good performance. After graduated from the college, he began to think about the direction of his future life as a new graduate. Children always be confused because they never get involved in the community. So when he faced with Mrs. Robinson's provocative and invited, Benjamin felt helpless. Although his refusal is to maintain the bottom line but continue to compromise. At this time, he has no plans for life and love. Predictably, he fell in love. More precisely, he was attracted by Mrs. Robinson's experience (whether good or bad) and the behavior between the mature woman's style. Benjamin met Mrs. Robinson's daughter Irene, all naturally, they fall in love. He beganed to change to take control of his life. It's not true love, it's growth. What is he knows himself, and is not being transferred. Then there is the drive to Berkeley, robbing the mess.

We see a child transformed into a man. Standing in the dogma, choice, confusion on the face of their own small but firm search. The film conveys a message: even if you wear a hat, you are still the social fresh man. As mentioned above, Benjamin is just a college graduate, he still need to learn more in life. The view of marriage, simply said, is people's views and attitudes towards marriage and family. There is a great difference on the view of marriage between China and America. Americans believe that marriage is a personal affair, no one can interfere with it. But in china, it's different. They are quite cautious on their marriage. They tend to think further, consider more thoughtful. The cultural differences between China and the United States are composed of social customs, family education, religious beliefs and so on.

1.2 Need for the study

Intercultural communication is what happens when people from different cultures come together to share their thoughts, feelings and information. The rise of intercultural communication in the United states. The United States is a country of immigrants, cultural collision occurs. Immigrants from all over the world emphasize and maintain their own culture, thus forming a multicultural pattern of the United states. Therefore, cross-cultural communication has attracted wide attention from American scholars and people from all walks of life. Japan is also unwilling to lag behind, in 1972 in Tokyo held the first International Symposium on intercultural communication, attended more than two thousand. 1974, Research (SIETAR, Society for Intercultural Education, Training ) was formally established in the United states. The study of intercultural communication in China started late. Professor Hu Wenzhong of Beijing Foreign Studies University began to study in intercultural communication in the early 80s works, has edited and published the "Intercultural Communication Studies", "cross cultural communication and language" and other books. At present, the study of intercultural communication has been developed into a comprehensive discipline which integrates the anthropology, linguistics, psychology, communication, sociology and so on.
