2.1Previous studies on The House on Mango Street

Compared with the dignified themes of her writings, growth and the meaning of life for instance, Sandra Cisneros#8217;s writing style is much more relaxing and delicate. In most of her novels, she adopts girl#8217;s point of view and simplified language to tell the stories that can easily draw readers#8217; attention and made them ponder. In almost all of her novels, Sandra Cisneros adopts a very unique writing style that characterized by simple diction, short and readable sentences and girls#8217; perspective narration.

Since the stories are simple, they are very readable and for many people with different education background. It#8217;s only through a series of efforts on thinking that the deeper meaning and themes can be pulled out. The novels can be taken not only as children#8217; s book but also as literature that has a positive effect on narration and theme presentation.

The House on Mango Street is a modified autobiographical novel made up of 44 interconnected vignettes. It focuses on the problems of being a woman in patriarchal Hispanic society through a series of observations by the narrator-Esperanza. She lives in a poor Hispanic neighborhood in Chicago, which she moves in at about 12 years old. It is a small community that the girls knows everyone there. During this year, Esperanza grows rapidly.
