humor is an ancient and interdisciplinary research subject, which could be traced to plato and aristotle era during the ancient greece, and kept sustainable development in the next two thousand years. humorous phenomenon has aroused many scholars#8217; interests in different areas#8217; subjects in the world. lots of achievements have been obtained both in theory and methodology. the cross disciplinary and cross cultural nature of humor determines that humor research is universal. therefore, numerous proposed theories of humor will be not at all surprising in the long history of humor research. at the same time, since having the same foundation of research-humor and many similarities between results of the research in different fields, it is advisable we can learn from each other.

sitcom is a typical way to covey humor to the hearer. sitcom shows that humor is ubiquitous. humor makes our life richer and cut down the unnecessary cultural barriers. friends and love apartment are very popular among audience around the world. they demonstrate the differences between chinese humor and american humor. because the two nations share different cultures including beliefs, habits, values and history, the ways of expressing humor are various.
this thesis is to analyze the differences between chinese and american humorous styles. taking friends and love apartment as examples, it will compare the differences of both verbal humor and situational humor from the perspective of culture.
