2. Literature Review Since Coetzee won Nobel Prize in literature in 2003, his works have become more and more popular in world literature. Most of his works are concerned about the struggling lives under post-colonialism. Under that historical background, many scholars have tended to study the post-colonialism of South Africa in his books. However, there are little narration about female in his books. As a result, scholars are lack of knowledge of Coetzee#8217;s perspective of feminism, especially analyzing from the female characters. 2.1 Definition of feminism Feminism refers to the social theory and political movement which is established and launched to end sexism, sexual exploitation, discrimination and oppression and to promote sexual equality. In literary works, feminism calls for a new interpretation with a female#8217;s vision and has a violent criticism on male literature which distorts the images of women. From the perspective of critics in this field, the fundamental approach to suppress women is to construct female images following strong and dominant men#8217;s ideas, while women are puny and don#8217;t have their own ideas. The creation of the female characters of In the Heart of the Country does confirm to the standard of the above definition. However, Coetzee did not show prejudice and ignorance of female. In contrast, through creating such kind of female characters, Coetzee tried to prove the existence of women and raise the awareness of feminism (He Ma, 2009; Zhang, 2014; Wang, 2013; Feng, 2015). Although Magda was described as a twisted old maid and all her words contradicted the male-dominated society, Magda tried hard to strive for the space for women and subvert the male discourse right. It raised the awareness of feminism in Coetzee#8217;s book. 2.2 Previous studies on Feminism For the former studies of In the Heart of the Country, most of them were focused on two topics: post-colonialism and feminism. However, no one has analyzed Coetzee#8217;s perspective of feminism by analyzing the female characters of In the Heart of the Country. 2.2.1 Studying feminism from the perspective of oppressions and resistance In general, for those who study feminism, most scholars focused on the oppressions and the resistance (Gao, 2006; Zhang, 2014; Wu, 2011). They believe that in this book, Magda struggles with the oppressions and shows her resistance to the fate that women would be forgotten in history. These scholars all believe that the feminism appeared by narrating the oppressions Magda suffered and the resistance she made. Though they shared the similar perspective, they studied in different ways. In Gao#8217;s paper, she pointed out that Magda had multiple identities in this book: the arrogant daughter of her father, a weak woman raped by Hendrik and the master of a black couple. The multiple identities made her in a complex network of oppressive relationship. Magda tried to liberalize herself by her continuous resistance. She said that there were two purposes of Magda#8217;s resistance. One is to establish subjectivity in women's history. The other is to find out what the subjectivity of women is. In Zhang#8217;s essay, she analyzed Magda#8217;s resistance from her diary novel. Also, she had a detailed description on Magda#8217;s mother, Magda and Anna#8217;s attitudes and behaviors towards the oppressions. Wu holds the view that her inner monologue is a place of ideological struggle (2011). It reflects the tension between the weak voice of women and strong voice of men. Magda#8217;s voice is her resistance. 2.2.2 By analyzing the historical background Also, some of the scholars attempt to unscramble feminism from the historical background: post-colonialism. Juan Cui (2015) spoke from a broader perspective. She talked about the reversal of relationship between father and daughter, master and servant and the dissolution of patriarchy. From analyzing the deconstruction of paternalism and the construction of feminism under such a social background, the author extended the topic to the reconstruction of the sexual relations and gave us a rough view of Coetzee#8217;s perspective of feminism. 2.2.3 By analyzing black women There is another important female character in the novel: Anna. She represented the status, behavior and fate of the vast majority of black women. So some scholars tried to study feminism from the perspective of black women although she is not the heroine. Li Zhou (2013) believes although the black women are not protagonists in Coetzee#8217;s novels and some can only be observed from the crevice, every time they appear, it embodies Coetzee's profound reflection on colonialism and racism. The focus of her study is black feminism, exploring the ethnic conflict and sexual discrimination. And Min Wu (2011) symbolizes Anna as a ”zero” in her paper. Li Zhou and Min Wu share the same opinion that Anna was under multiple oppressions and she couldn#8217;t show her voice in that society. 2.3 Limitations in the previous study Reviewing all the works mentioned above on feminism of In the Heart of the Country, we can find some limitations of the previous studies. First, scholars seldom explored feminism of Coetzee from the perspective of Magda#8217;s internal monologue. Magda#8217;s internal monologue accounts for a large proportion in the book, especially in Magda#8217;s features and psychology changes. In spite of the fact that some scholars have studied the feminism by analyzing Magda, they just decode the character by learning her growth environment and the final formation of her character (Liu, 2016). Feng believes, by learning the prototypes of In the Heart of the Country and Waiting for the Barbarians and analyzing the historical meaning of the prototypes, she can have a better understand of feminism in this book (2015). The lack of direct analysis of Magda#8217;s internal monologue remains to be further researched. What#8217; more, the behaviors of the female characters haven#8217;t been deeply studied. Most scholars tended to study Coetzee#8217;s perspective of feminism by decoding Magda#8217;s resistance (Gao, 2006; Zhang, 2014; Wu, 2011). Nobody has analyzed Magda and Anna#8217;s detailed behaviors such as patricide, dealing with the corpse and so on. The general description of resistance was not minute enough to show feminism. Last but not least, the differences and similarities between Magda and Anna haven#8217;t been studied before. Although the black women are not protagonists in Coetzee#8217;s novels and some can only be observed from the crevice, every time they appear, some critiques believe it embodies Coetzee's profound reflection on black feminism (Zhou, 2013; Wu, 2011). Wang studied feminism by figuring out the differences of the female images in Coetzee#8217;s four books: Foe, Disgrace, Waiting for the Barbarians and In the Heart of the Country (2013). However, why Magda and Anna responded differently to the oppression and why they had the same fate have not been mentioned in previous works. To have a more comprehensive evaluation of feminism, this perspective is worth studying.
