New English Curriculum for Chinese Primary Schools emphasized that students reading should proceed in an orderly way , so it sets up different reading goals for students in different grades and puts forward accordingly reading skills which should be obtained.Although the language knowledge of the textbook is systematic and clear, there are some limitations on the design of contents. It is impossible to achieve the above goals by relying solely on English teaching materials. Picture book, with its colorful pictures,brief words and sentences, and prominent theme ,is a suitable material for primary students to enlarge their reading quantity. Therefore, how to take advantage of the picture books to improve the reading capacity of primary students is of great importance. The textbook and picture books are complementary in English teaching.
The introduction of picture book:
The word ”huiben” originating from Japan, is called ”picture book#8217; in English, and in Chinese, it can be translated into ”tuhuashu” or ”huiben”.It is designed with dedicated pictures and brief words, above all, it places great emphasis on the relevance between the theme and emotions.In Taiwan and Japan, ”tuhuashu” and ”huiben” are distinguished. They believed that ”huiben” should be pictured by specialized authors, who fulfilled their values and emotions in it, while in mainland China,” the word ”huiben”has been widely recognized. Hence, the ”picture book” and ”picture story book” are not purposely differentiated in this essay.The master of picture book in Japan ,Mr. Song Juzhi once used a vivid formula to reveal the meaning of picture book in 1969, that is picture* words= picture book. That is to say, picture book is a stimulation for students , even for illiterate students to broaden their imagination while reading and explore the theme of the book as well as the beauty of the book. One of the world- famous presidents , Perry Nodelman in Children#8217;s Literature Association also deemed that ”The picture book refers to a book that is designed for children and relies on a series of pictures and a small number of words, or no words at all. Therefore, picture books are mainly pictures, words are auxiliary, pictures even have stronger narrative functions than words.
The current teaching situation of English reading in primary school:
Nowadays, English reading has received a lot of attention. According to the legislative work of the state council, the state administration of press, publication, radio, film and television has drafted the National Reading Promotion Ordinance (draft) in 2016 . Under the circumstance of promoting quality education, the draft urges that the administrative department of education under the State Council ,according to the physical and mental development status and actual situation of minors,should show much concern to develop their reading interest ,reading habit and reading capability.At the same time, it also encourages teachers to ” Set up corresponding English reading courses and carry out various forms of reading activities.” Thus, English reading teaching has become the important breakthrough of education reform in our country, Chinese scholars and teachers has also give their opinions on picture-book teaching in English class and make some achievements.
