1. Introduction 1.1 Research background Margaret Mitchell (1900-1949) was one of the most popular modern female writers in American literature and one of the most famous women writers in the history of world literature. She had a short life and did not leave too much works. But just the one work named Gone With The Wind placed her at unshakable position in the history of world literature. The novel got great favor when it was published and spread widely during that time . To be honest, this work is one of the most widely sellers in America even in the world; it also is one of the classic novels in the history of American romantic love novels. The novel describes a girl#8217;s love story in different stages with the background of the Civil War of America and the reconstruction after the Civil War. Why Margaret Mitchell describes the love story in the war vividly? It has something to do with her upbringing and unfortunate love story. Due to the background of the Civil War, this work is full of not only romanticism but also realism. I will focus on the realism and the influences of realism on female#8217;s view of marriage. . 1.2 Need of the study The novel puts the love entanglement and life experience of heroine as the main line, describing the life and love story of characters; meanwhile it shows the similarities and differences between the political economic and cultural aspects in north and south. So, the work is full of realism. My thesis will focus the influences of realism on heroine and changes of heroine#8217;s mind during the different three stages due to the reality . The heroine chooses her marriage for meeting her need of reality, which also is the fundamental reasons of her tragic marriage. Therefore, my thesis aims to tell people to set up correct view of marriage. 1.3. Literature review Gone With The Wind has got great concern since it is published. In my opinion, the tragic marriage of heroine just shows her characters greatly. It is the main line. Some people give their views to the heroine#8217;s tragic marriage. Kong qianyun (2014) makes a comment in tragic love and marriage in Margaret Mitchell#8217;s work- Gone With The Wind. She holds that we can find heroine#8217;s view that marriage meets for her different need in different stages. Among of three marriages, no one is completely out of the need for love, which is the ultimate reason for her tragic marriage. Xu qian Hu xiaoqiong(2016)believe that era background has something to do with marriage view. The marriage view of heroine is out of the reality and her need; a marriage without love is doomed to tragic. Liu zhifei(2008) thinks that the environment influence character and mind. People make choice and changes for survival with the changes of social environment. Li hongji (2012)thinks that the description of heroine#8217;s three tragic marriage shows that social changes and character changes bring some inevitable results.
