1. 研究目的与意义(文献综述包含参考文献)

1.Introduction Idioms are germs of a nation#8217;s culture, with which the most brilliant part of a nation#8217;s language can be introduced to people of different cultures. Therefore, the significance of idiom translation cannot be emphasized too much. However, it#8217;s been a long-debated topic whether the translator should be the source language (SL) oriented or the target language (TL) oriented. After a critical analysis of the above two translation strategies, this thesis argues that points out that instead of breaking target conventions by maintaining foreignness of the original, the strategy of foreignization should creatively maintain ST cultural differences in the target text. The translation strategy analyzed in this thesis aims to promote mutual understanding among different cultures. 1.1Need for the study In an age when the globalization and multiculturalism undergo rapid development, the dominant culture will inevitably cast its influence on other cultures, bringing about cultural globalization. Hence, some subordinate cultures are confronted with the risk of being assimilation. Meanwhile, these subordinate cultures are making every effort to strive for their own development. Both Chinese and English cultures have a long history and rich vocabulary, so the two cultures comprise a large number of idioms. However, each has its own national and local color, language expression, literal meaning and the inter-cultural philosophy, which bring about obstacles in idiom translation. In order to help the native speakers of English and Chinese gain a better understanding of each others#8217; idioms and promote communication between countries, translators and translation theorists are trying to explore effective method of translation. Since the theory of foreignization and domestication has been published, it has always been a hot topic among scholars whether the translation should be dominated by foreignization or domestication. Since there is no consensus that reached in this issue and translation as an important media has been playing an important role in facilitating communication, the study of the translation strategy of foreignization is considered to be of great significance. 1.2 Research purpose The thesis intends to study the application of the domestication and foreignization in idiom translation and further analyze the merits of the latter. Specifically speaking, The foreignization translation is not to change the cultural, linguistic and stylistic features of the original text when conveying the content of the original text, requiring readers to get close to the author and adapt to the means of source-oriented. In the source language and target language, when the cultural connotation, reflected by the combination of image and metaphor , is same or the implicit meaning of image carried by the source language can be easily understand by the target language . Therefore, we can adopt foreignization translation so as to keep the style of the original, which retains national, local color of the source language implied meaning of the source language. Since idioms are an integral part in language and it combines all forms of rhetorical device, it can be regarded as the condensed culture. Considering the cultural difference between Chinese and English, we have to take the both translation strategy into consideration so that the inter-cultural communication can be reached. The thesis intends to study foreignization by the combination of the findings of the predecessors and the samples to show the translation strategy. 2. Literature review The strategies of domestication and foreignization have long been discussed and disputed in translation studies both at home and abroad, But these two terms did not come into being until Venuti first used them in 1995 in his book The Translator#8217;s Invisibility, in which he traced the roots of these terms back to Schleiermacher#8217;s famous notion of the translation which ”leaves the reader in peace, as much as possible, and moves the author towards him”, or” leaves the author in peace, as much as possible, and moves the reader towards him”(shuttleworthCowie,2004:44.59) With the exception of the fifteen or sixteen years following the May 4th movement , the first hundred years(from the 1870s to the 1970s) of the history of China#8217;s literary translation was characterized by the domination of strategy of domestication(孙敬礼,2002:40). This phenomenon may well be explained by Lefevere#8217;s findings. For one thing, cultures that are relatively homogeneous tend to see their own way of doing things as”naturally”,the only way, which just as naturally becomes the ”best” way when confronted with other ways(BassnettLefevere,2001:14). If translation is carried out on the dimension of linguistics; translation as art assimilation(free; sense-for-sense) or alienation(word-for-word); if translation is carried out on the dimension of cultural studies: translation as ideology domesticating(colonializing)or foreignization(decolonializing). When culture is taken into account in translation, the paradox of domestication and foreignization replaces that of free translation and literal translation(罗选民,2004)。

2.1 Theoretical foundations In 1983, Schleiermacher, the German classical linguist and translation theorist, put forward the notion that there are only two ways in translation: ”leaves the reader in peace, as much as possible, and moves the author towards him”, or ”leaves the author in peace, as much as possible, and moves the reader towards him”. In 1955, Lawrence Venuti, an American translation theorist, viewed in his book The Translator#8217;s Invisibility that the first translation strategy as the foreignization and the second domestication. The representative of the former is Lawrence Venuti while the latter is Nida E.A. In1987, Liu Yingkai critically criticized the translation strategy of domestication and analyzed it by the various manifestation of examples, such as the abuse of four words idioms, quaint idiom, abstract method, substitution method, and the original visualization or allusions without any foundations It can be seen that the domestication translation has both positive and negative aspects. While venuti, the representative of foreignization, proposed to the smooth translation of the original text, namely, deconstructive translation theory. He was opposed to the traditional translation strategy-domestication while advocated the translation strategy of foreignization with the purpose to develop the translation strategy and practices that is against that of the cultural values that are dominated by the target language and show the cultural difference in the target language. He deemed that the translation should be carried out with the literal translation in a maximum level, and the translator should try to faithfully reproduce the original language and take in the new expression method as far as possible. 2.2 Deconstructive perspective For time being, most of the translation theories have made rigid distinctions between original texts and their translations, and rested upon faithfulness or equivalence that determines subsequent claims about the nature and quality of those translations.Yet deconstructionists are thinking about translation in other than traditional terms and undertaking a radical resetting of the bases upon which translation theory is founded. For instance, the subject of translation theory has traditionally involved some concept of determinable meaning that can be transferred to another language.Deconstructionists, however, question such a definition of translation and use the practice of translation to demonstrate the instability of its own theoretical framework. In addition to that, they resist systems of categorization that separate the ”source” text from the” target” text or”language” from”meaning”, deny the existence of underlying forms independent of language, and question theoretical assumptions that presume original beings in whatever shape or form. Thus the process of translation is one of infinite regress#8212;the translated text becomes a translation of another earlier translation and translated words represent nothing but other words representing nothing but still other words representing. That is to say, the relationship between an original text and it translations is not so much equivalent as actively supplementary to each other. 2. 研究的基本内容、问题解决措施及方案

2.1 Research Questions The present study foreignization in idiom translation. The specific research questions are as follows: 1.What is the necessities and advantages of employing foreignization as the strategy in idiom translation? 2.What is the application and the limitation of employing foreignization as the strategy in idiom translation? 2.2 Data Collection The above mentioned studies compare idioms extracted from OXFORD Idioms Dictionary. After carrying out the data cleaning, it is more reasonable and representative. Besides, it is plausible to infer Chines scholars` analyses on English culture and language on the basis of it.
