when lee was young, he inspired by the chinese culture. in adulthood, he effected by the western culture. because of the special education and growing environment, lee always feels deeper than others about the western and chinese cultures, and the modern and original cultures. it is he that stands on the cultural joint point, he can use the cosmopolitan view to make films. his tolerant attitude becomes the only way to solve the cultural dilemmas and conflicts. at the same time, the audience can keep a neutral angle to treat different cultures.
as chinese cultural foundation is deeply rooted in ang lee’s mind, he got many unique and new ideas when facing with western culture. and lee put these special thoughts in his movies, especially chinese-language movies. ang lee shows lots of chinese elements such as chinese kungfu, tai ji, chinese food, costume and building. more than that, chinese ideology and traditional culture are conveyed to audience, the most prominent is the chinese filial piety culture which is the root of confucianism, and confucianism is the central part of chinese culture, so filial culture is regarded as the core of chinese culture. pushing hands is lee’s first feature film. together with two following films, the wedding banquet (1993) and eat drink man woman (1994), it forms his family trilogy, which is also known as the “father knows best”, each of which deals with conflicts between an older and more traditional generation and their children as they confront a world of change.
