1. 研究目的与意义(文献综述)

in the western world, among many people showing great interests with traditional chinese culture, gary snyder had an infatuated attitude towards the chinese culture. from the chinese poet han shan to chinese ancient poems, from chinese zen to chinese confucianism, he was deeply influenced by the difference between chinese culture and western one. under this kind of influence, he created several kinds of works connected with chinese classic poems. meanwhile, as one of the representatives of the beat generation, his works with chinese features have made a difference on the development of the literature of the generation. this thesis intends to make a research on his works especially the translation of chinese classic poems.

although there are a few snyder’s translation, they have an important influence. compared with many translations of han shan’s poems, snyder’s translations are the tersest. in the past, han shan’s poems seemed to use such a spoken language, slang without much attention to the rhythm, so people in that period of time did not show any preference to them. however, with 1000 thousands years passed by, han shan’s poems spread to the united states and japan and became popular under snyder’s perfect translation. moreover, han shan was regarded as the idol of american teenagers in 1960s.many scholars made researches on the han shan’s poems because of snyder’s translation.

nowadays in china, people mostly focus on the translations’ sentencesand words, they also analyses the meaning of the special words snyder used. concequently, they carry the research from the rhetorical devices, including rhyme, parallelism, metaphor. furthermore, they point out some ideas that from the translations, maybe part of people who are not proficient in english can still imagine the scenery that han shan described in his poems. however, some experts insist that the terse words and sentences can not express perfectly because chinese words have various kinds of meaning, just in one poem, the same words may have totally different meaning. thus from a chinese student’s perspective, i will focus on the comparison of the chinese poems and the translations.

2. 研究的基本内容与方案

In this thesis, I will make my research on Snyder’s translation of Chinese classic poems. It contains the background, analysis of Gary Snyder’s translation of Han Shan’s Poems, methods of Gary Snyder’s translation, the cultural resonance from analysis of the translation of Gary Snyder and the original poems of Han Shan, the reason of the resonance between the East and the Western.

The thesis finally can finish to unscramble the resonance and make readers have a deep understanding of the translation of Gary Snyder and the poems of Han Shan. It can arouse to the desire to explore the glamour of translation of Chinese classic poems. In addition, it writes to make clear of the methods in the translation and show readers translator’s subjectivity. In the thesis, i will mostly compare the Chinese poems and the translation together, sentence by sentence to indicate how the resonance happen, think from two aspects and point out every methods. Moreover, i will provide some famous works as the examples. When i meet some problems, i will search for the references and look up in the electronic library to acquire more information and arguments to support my ideas.
