withthe obsession of accumulating material wealth, people in the modern worldrarely have time to think about who they are and what is the meaning of theirexistence. in america, widely known as a huge melting pot, the situation forafrican-american, a social minority group, is even worse. under the dominanceof western centrism, many of them not only get lost in this materialized world,but also lost their unique cultural identity and traditions.

therefore,to maintain one’s identity, it is imperative to review their own culture toextract essence for their spiritual life. culture can connect people to certainsocial values, beliefs, religions and customs, thus it enables socialminorities to cultivate a sense of unity and belongings, as well as allows themto better understand their ancestors and the history of their nation.

besides,cultural traditions, transmitting shared values, stories and goals from onegeneration to the next, are of importance in significant occasions or lifetransitions. all kinds of rituals and holidays with cultural meanings areserved to preserve and pass on a certain nation’s culture. these culturalpractices, along with many other factors, reinforce and maintain their sense ofidentity.

2. 研究的基本内容与方案

thispaper will analyze the cultural identity and traditions presenting in song ofsolomon. and with this paper i want to have a certain understanding about howto maintain an ethnic cultural identity in modern world with pervasive culturalcrush and material temptation.

firstly,after finishing reading son of solomon written by toni morrison, i will readgender race and culture – the literary creation of toni morrison written bywang shouren and wu xinyun to attain a rough understanding about black culture,which gives me the basic foundation for the following analysis. then i’d liketo read new essays on son of solomon to get a basic understanding of how toanalyze it.

mypaper will be divided mainly into three parts. first, i will concentrate on thecultural tradition presenting in song of solomon, including the underlyingmeaning of their name, folktales and music, and the idea of harmony between manand nature. then i will analyze different cultural choices of african american.lastly, i will make a conclusion about the cultural stance and choice of tonimorrison. she holds the view that to better integrate into american society,african american should first gain their own cultural identity but not limitedby it. combining their own culture and american modern culture is a betterchoice.
