1. 研究目的与意义(文献综述)
the saga novel the joy luck club is a maiden work written by the chinese american female writer amy tan. when it was first released in 1989, it created a big stir among readers, which made it spend nine-month on the new york times best-seller list. the novel describes the emotional stories between the four chinese women with different characters and different fates that abandoned the national calamity, family hatred and moved to the united states and their daughters who were born and grew up in the united states. as a chinese american writer with dual cultural identity, almost all of amy tan's works have a similar theme: the conflict and reconciliation over identity between the american daughter and the chinese mother. the theme of her works, without exception, not only reflects the profound impact of chinese culture on her, but also promotes her attitude towards two different cultures: attaching the great importance of american mainstream culture and cherishing the traditional chinese culture.
it is an unavoidable problem that identity is a theme not only for chinese american writers, but also for all chinese american people in the context of the social environment of chinese immigrants today. this paper through the discussion of the four mother-daughter conflicts and reconciliations over identity between the two generations of chinese and american, helps people see the development prospect of chinese and western culture on the basis of knowing the cultural differences and between chinese and western cultures from conflict, collision, paragenesis, communication to fusion. from part to macrocosm, the process from misunderstanding, conflicting to communicating and understanding not only reflects the collision, communication and blending between the east and the west, but also indicates the attitudes of understanding, communication and trust should be taken between the coexistence of different countries, nations and cultures in the globalized world today.
in 2016, president xi jinping pointed out that civilization is colorful because of communication and civilization is rich in mutual understanding. the chinese nation is a nation of “heiner rivers, inclusive”. we should take the attitude of learning and should actively absorb the beneficial elements of the outstanding civilized results created by people of all countries in the long historical process. it can promote communications between different civilizations. the destiny of chinese culture and the western culture are bound together to create a human fate community. all chinese americans should cross the gap between different nations, cultures and countries and get out of the shadow of cultural confrontation to build a beautiful world with the coexistence of diversity and harmony.
2. 研究的基本内容与方案
This paper focuses on the conflict and reconciliation between two Generations of Chinese Americans over identity by analyzing the novel The Joy Luck Club, and the general points will be the following: Firstly, an introduction. In this part, brief introductions to Amy Tan and The Joy Luck Club will be shown. Besides, the literature review and significance and layout of this paper will be included. Secondly, the performances of identity conflict mainly from both sides of the Chinese mother’s identity conflict and the American daughter’s identity conflict will be written according to the novel. As the first generation of emigrated mothers, they accepted the traditional cultural values. Experienced the liberation of the domestic warfare, they carried the dream and came to a foreign country. Mothers’ American dream is reflected in the expectations of her daughter's future. However, under the influence of the mainstream culture in the United States, the daughters grew up with the desire of a kind of American life and looked forward to integrate into the mainstream western society. Thirdly, I will analyze causes of identity conflict. In this part, the causes like culture negation, sense of worth and social condition will be discussed in detail. Fourthly, here comes to the matters of achieving reconciliation.
Since relative researches and studies of The Joy Luck Club are written about the conflict between mother and daughter, this paper will pay much attention to a rarely mentioned aspect: conflict and reconciliation between two generations of Chinese Americans over identity by combining with the actual.
