1. 研究目的与意义（文献综述）

Game of Thrones is an adaptation of George R. R. Martin's series of fantasy novels A Song of Ice and Fire, which set in the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos in the middle ages. The series emerges the violent power struggles among the realm's noble families for the Iron Throne, while other families fight for independence from it. The common theme of the show is the power struggle, which shows the unique medieval society. Martin admits Game of Thrones uses the seven-book series, The Accursed Kings, which was written by the French author Maurice Druon. It features everything people could expect from a medieval struggle for a throne, so much so that Martin dubbed it “the original game of thrones.”

The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, adapted from the novel of the same title which was written by Luo Guanzhong, describes that the three states, Cao Wei, Shuhan and Eastern Wu, contend for the throne in the end of East Han Dynasty. The period started from the collapse of the Han Dynasty 206 B.C, and ended in 280 A. D. with the conquest of the last Wu Kingdom. Unlike the novel A Song of Ice and Fire, Luo is generally acknowledged to have adopted a pro-Shu stance, and frequently depicted the other two states in a negative light. One of the sources that Luo took inspiration from was the records of the Three Kingdoms which was written by Chen Shou. There are the reasons why the paper compares these two TV shows. First, they all focus on the power struggle among different force which reflect the great change of their era and create a group of heroes. The definite plot line of these two TV shows is when the unified country was shattered, locality separatists set up different regimes, through successive years of tangled warfare, the strongest part unified the country. The prototype of Game of Thrones is the history of England and the wars of the roses, and the author claims that he references many characters and plots from the Romance of The Three Kingdoms. This paper researches these similarities between them to show the similarities of the eastern and western culture. Second, there are different kinds of journal published about the Romance of The Three Kingdoms and Game of Thrones in recent years. The research scope is mostly the female image and the writing style of their author, while the study of power struggle is less. Looking back of Chinese long feudal society and political development process, power struggle which is an important content of political culture in Chinese society has always been a very sensitive but wide concern. It is also the main problem of the traditional political culture in Chinese feudal society. These two successful TV shows which are greatly applauded by people around the world reflect the changes of society and embody the complicated and intense power struggle. Based on this, this paper focuses on power struggle to interpret the eastern and western feudal monarchies from all walks of life.

2. 研究的基本内容与方案

This paper focuses on the comparative study of Power Struggle in Game of Thrones and the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and the general points will be the following: Firstly, an introduction to the background of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Game of Thrones. In this part, the eastern and western feudal monarchies will be included. Besides, brief introductions to these two TV shows will be shown. Although these two TV shows appeared in different era, in different country and in different society, there are some similarities between them which should be noticed. Secondly, points like the personal character, the military strategies, the feudal thought and the conflict between the kingship and the church of these two TV shows will be analyzed one by one. In this part, the differences of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Game of Thrones will be discussed in detail. Thirdly, it is the conclusion part. The whole paper will be summarized from several perspectives.

Since relative researches and studies of the comparison between the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Game of Thrones are limited, the paper will consult bibliographies of the respective studies of these two TV shows and some comments about them.
