the movie dead poets society is based on the novelof the same name in 1989. it was directed by the director peter weir, mainlyperformed by robin williams, ethan hawke, robert sean leonard and so on... whenfirstly screened in america, the movie strongly shocked the audiences and wonseveral high-profile awards such as academy award for best original screenplay,best picture, best motion picture drama and best original score motion picture.meanwhile, it was widely claimed as one of the most well-know and influentialeducational movie of the twentieth century. and its dialogues are always quotedin teaching.

thedevelopment of the plot is based on time, aiming to express the progressivefriendship among the children and show their respect to keating. the movie canbe divided into two parts, the style of first part is like comedy, and thesecond part is like tragedy. the scene changes from peaceful, colorful to dark,cold, this change is like the feeling of audiences whose emotions fluctuatewith the plot. even though peter weir is a hollywood director, his movie is notlike a commercial movie. he always uses his unique idea and aesthetic perspectiveto interpret complicated and contradictory life, such as this movie whichinvolves the contradiction of children and adult, the confrontation ofachieving oneself and compromise.

there are the reasons whyi chose this movie and interpret their characters. first, people can discussthe theme of this movie from variety perspectives. as most people say, it canbe regarded as an educational movie; people can analyze the education systemand discuss their school motto: tradition, honor, discipline and excellence.besides these, people can also discuss romanticism and realism in this movie.teacher keating and student neil as the symbol of romanticism will be contrastedwith the realism symbol, school and neil’s father. then, it can be consideredfrom adolescence’s psychology. all these boys who are in adolescence are easilyinfluenced by others and they are full of passion to life but sometimesextremely. so, right guide is necessary for them and also for otheradolescence. secondly, the characters are depicted in details. the depiction expressed from the perspective of theiractions, their eye contacts, their language and their emotion. accordingto the above, educational system is the most important theme of controversy andlots of papers have discussed that from a variety of perspectives, however, iwant to probe into another topic from concrete details to the whole story.someone said: there are no two leaves exactly in the world. people are thesame. different people have different personality. thus, the paper aims tointerpret the mainly characters separately from the perspectives of language,action, psychology, and emotion. finally, finding the significant meaningbeneath the surface.

2. 研究的基本内容与方案

Thethesis will mainly focus on the analysis of the tragic characters in the DeadPoets Society as well as the importance of psychology in children’sadolescence. It will be discussed in the following parts: First part will be theintroduction which includes some information about the plot of the movie andthe main characters. This brief introduction would help with a generalacquaintance of the conflicts. Second part is about the reason of the tragedy.In this part, personalities of main characters in the movie will be discussedseparately from their language, action, and psychology. Meanwhile, socialfactors and psychology factors will also be considered as the reason. Thirdpart will probe into the practical significance of the movie. This part willmain discuss the importance of psychology in children’s adolescence and theinfluence of parents and teachers in the same time. In the end, a conclusionwill give a summary of the whole paper.

Eventhough the papers of Dead Poets Society have discussed that from a variety of perspectives a lot of times, from theinterpretation of characters is limited. Thus, the paper will consult from thecomments of the movies and some books or journal of psychology.
