1. 研究目的与意义(文献综述)
currently, the number of chinese dramas and movies which go abroad is increasing and traditional chinese culture is gaining more influence. it is a great time to publicize chinese culture and it is a chance for foreigners to have a deep understanding about china, chinese people and chinese culture. there are more chinese elements in english television dramas and movies and the number of foreigners who tend to watch chinese dramas and novels has an increasing growth. what’s more, with the expanding china’s cultural influence, chinese elements are appearing in global fashion show, for example, a number of chinese elements can be shown in victoria’s secrets 2016. at the same time, there are a sea of television dramas which convey traditional chinese culture and chinese audience prefer to watch this kind of television plays, such as the legend of zhenhuan, the chin empire series. as traditional chinese culture is gaining popularity in both home and abroad, traditional chinese culture should be protected and publicized to people throughout the world. besides, translation plays a significant role in the course of spreading chinese culture. this paper will focus on the translation of chinese element in the legend of zhenhuan and study the methods and strategies of translation, and this paper will find out whether english audience can understand and accept these translation and have the same feeling towards plots and characters in the legend of zhenhuan.
translation is to turn meaning from one language into another, which aims to link up thoughts and emotions, spread knowledge and culture, promote social civilization.(孙致礼,1999). translation has a long history and there are a number of distinguished translators in china and western countries. chinese translation can be traced back to han dynasty, translators mainly translated the buddhist scriptures at that time. the earliest translators in the west is cicero who was a notable philosopher in the roman empire. in contemporary era, along with the rapid development of china’s economy and further deepened globalization, translation has become increasingly important in communicating different cultures. in the past years, china’s translation research has gained its pleasant achievements, and translation research fields become more widely and translation techniques become more mature. achievements can be reflected on these aspects, more translation research books appeared, translation theories improved, translation insights diversity, and translation methods and techniques are more objective and scientific. to give and example, translation standard has always be the heated debate focuses, for example, yan fu once proposed ‘faithfulness, smoothness, elegance’, and qian zhongshu put forward ‘transformation’, however, these translation standards are lack of systematicness, elaboration and analyzability (陈福康, 1992). nowadays, translators are more open with the standards of translation. translation researchers think that there is no fixed translation standard and the standards should be diversification and mutual supplement(辜正坤,2003).
this paper focuses on the translation of chinese elements in the legend of zhenhuan and will study the translation techniques used in these translations. what’s more, the paper will compare these translation of chinese elements with other works and find out whether these translations are appropriate ones. this paper aims to research the edges and shortcomings of translations of chinese elements in the legend of zhenhuan, and present to the readers. thus, people can learn its advantages and abandon its shortages on their translation. besides, translators can have a better understanding on how to translate chinese elements and convey chinese culture to foreigners.
2. 研究的基本内容与方案
The paper focuses on the translation of Chinese elements in the Legend of Zhenhuan(English Edition), and it can be divided into five parts. In the first part, the paper mainly introduce basic information about the Legend of Zhenhuan and translation, which includes the main plot of the Legend of Zhenhuan and Chinese elements in the Legend of Zhenhuan as well as general theories and requirements of translation. In the second part, the paper will study translation of names and places in the Legend of Zhenhuan. In this part, the paper will introduce translation strategies and theories of names and places and Thomas Francis Wade and Wade-Giles romanization. In the third part, the paper will study translation of titles in the Legend of Zhenhuan. In this part, the paper will introduce Hans Vermeer and Skopos Theory and compare titles in the Legend of Zhenhuan with the titles in British Royalty. In the fourth part, the paper study translation of poetry in the Legend of Zhenhuan. In this part, the paper will introduce Xu Yuanchong and translation theory of classical poems and compare with the translation of poems in A Dream in Red Mansions. Finally, a conclusion will be given.
This paper aims to conduct a deep research on translation of Chinese elements, especially those elements which contain profound cultural meanings. What’s more, the paper aims to find out whether English audience can understand and accept those translation of Chinese elements and have the same feelings towards the plots and characters in the Legend of Zhenhuan. In order to conduct a good research, the paper mainly includes these research methods: literary research method, investigation method and comparison analysis method.
