1. 研究目的与意义(文献综述)
Motto refers to a phrase meant to formally describe the general motivation or intention of a social group or organization. School motto, accordingly, is something that can reflect the spirit, feature and educational ideal of a university. It is the essence of the campus culture. Besides, as for Chinese university motto, it is also accumulations of Chinese history and culture.
Motto, whose major functions are informational and imperative, is a special functional application style, serving as cultural exchange and external publicity. In view of its aforementioned functions and its feature of being the most symbolic, concise and powerful way of expression, an apposite English translation is of great significance for the Chinese university. The Chinses-English translation (C-E translation) of university motto belongs to applied translation or practical translation, aiming at solving the inconvenience caused by language barriers, ultimately, promoting international exchanges and cooperation. Globalization has not only brought economic integration, but also cultural exchanges. Quite a few Chinese universities have set up a friendly partnership with universities overseas for academic and cultural exchanges and cooperation by enrolling foreign students as well as sending students abroad for a two-way education. Hence, for further exchanges and cooperation, for a more extensive external publicity, also, for a better public image, the C-E translation of its motto is absolutely necessary for the university, more importantly, the translation must be faithful, expressive and elegant.
So far, there have already been plenty of studies on university motto translation, and most of them are journal articles. For the start, as to theoretical basis, books such as Meaning Across Cultures by Nida, E.A. and William, and 《新编汉英翻译教程》by professor 陈宏薇may be turned to for support. And there are many journal articles on C-E translation of university motto from various perspectives, such as Chinese-English Translation of National University Mottos from the Perspective of Cultural Translation Theory by Li Peng-hui and Jia De-jiang, A Study of English Translation of University Motto in China from the Perspective of Relevance Theory by Xu Shuguang,《从接受美学视角评析国内高校校训的英译》by 胡波 and so on. Undoubtedly, these jounals can widen and deepen the thoughts when writing this paper. Additionally, there are several studies which are wirtten based on the motto of a particular university or college as well, for instance,《从苏州大学校训中管窥中英互译原理》by杜争鸣. All of these studies are beneficial to the later exploration.
Since the C-E translation of university motto bears the task of transmitting minds, this paper, on the basis of the former studies on university motto translation, attempts to fathom out the translation skills and principles required to fully convey the cultural connotations of the university. Ultimately, this paper makes a summary and grasps the regularity in English translation of Chinese university mottos.
