1. 研究目的与意义(文献综述)

lin yutang is one of the most famous writers, linguists, and translators in literary circle of china. being cultivated with western culture, he grew great interest in western culture and literature. he did huge influence on chinese translation. he not only spread the essence of chinese culture to western world, but also made great attribution to chinese translation no matter on the style or on the unique technique.

this article aims to explore the non-equivalence phenomena in his translation of six chapters of a floating life. by contrasting the different expressions in english and chinese versions, this article will find out the forms of these techniques such as omission, addition, word formation, transformation and so on. different techniques will be analyzed for their function in the work. as the distinct cultural background and usage of language in english and chinese literature, there are some difficulties during translation. this article will find out how lin yutang dealt with these difficulties and the reasons why he dealt these problems in such way. last but not least, this article will discuss the effect of how lin yutang dealt with these non-equivalence phenomena. the effect may be various on different aspects. as we all know, six chapter of a floating life is a classical chinese work picturing a life of the ancient man of letters, which includes the love life, family life, career life and social life. it is even a little difficult for modern people to understand entirely, let alone for the foreign readers. the lines matched both in sound and sense are hard to be conveyed on their original meaning and implication, but somehow lin yutang did it in a simple and delicate way. the effect is not only on the spreading chinese culture to the foreign country, but also on the outstanding translation techniques on the advancement of chinese translation career.

to write this article is partly because of my own love for the translated version of six chapter of a floating life, and also partly because of the delicate and beneficial translation techniques in this version which made huge influence on the translation career. lin yutang’ s translation is not a word-for-word form but a flexible and appropriate one. instead of sticking to the special words in ancient time, he changed his way of thinking and translated them in an ordinary but creative way. may be it may seem common, but after pondering the meaning of the words and the connection among sentences, we can see the versed and solid translation knowledge of him. on the non-equivalence phenomena, he used various methods to overcome the problems. although sometimes the style, structure or specific words are changed, the essence of the article remains. he also chose the way of dealing with these phenomena in accordance with the preference of the readers, in other words, he conveyed the meaning of this article in a way that the foreign readers can accept and like. it is not only a matter of translation technique, but also a matter of translation ideology. the significance of this article lies on the analyzing and functioning the various ways of dealing with the non-equivalence phenomena, and also the way of thinking in a foreign way to translate. it will also explore the importantance on translating the literary work in such a way.
