lao she is one of the most significant writers of 20th-century chinese literature. charles dickens is an english writer who is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the victorian era. lao she has spent many years in england when he was young. during that time, he derived inspiration from the stories in dickens’ works. to be open eyed and open minded has awakened his interest in literature creation. due to their preferring to describe the lower classes, show great concern for social problems and explain universal inequities. all of these show their exposition and critique to the dark reality, their glorious humanitarian feelings of human nature and their humorous expression. that’s why people entitle lao she “the dickens of china.” however, lao she is based on chinese social reality, chinese cultural background and different characters, so he forms his own special characteristics.

most of the modern chinese writers during the may 4th period have influenced by foreign literature and culture. digging deeply into their development and innovation on the basis of such influence is of important significance for how to bring traditional chinese cultures into world culture system as well as keep its own characteristic under the multiform of global culture. lao she is the most typical one of them.

many scholars have produce fruitful results via studying the relationship between lao she and dickens. their researches are basically the same form, choosing one side to compare lao she and dickens’ creation, such as the characters and humor art. in spite of there are many studies about the relationship between lao she and dickens, yet very little research has addressed lao she’s inherited of the traditional chinese culture during his literature creation process.

2. 研究的基本内容与方案

This paper mainly discusses the influence of Dickens’ creations features to Lao She and his works’ development on the basis of Dickens’ creations. The whole paper will be discussed in the following parts. First will be the introduction. To introduce the enlightenment of Dickens’ works to Lao She’s literature creation during the British period. Second part is about Dickens’ impact on Lao She’s literature creation, which mainly reflected in three aspects: firstly, from the works’ writing style, both of them mixes humor into their works to satirize the unreasonable social system. Secondly, the characterization of ordinary people. Dickens chose the lower classes of the London society, while Lao She wrote the poor people in Beijing into his works. Thirdly, the choice of the subject matter. They created their hometown as the basis of their creation. Dickens fading together with London. He was conflicted abut the swift changes of the city. Lao She put the Beijing society as his creation background. Third part discusses his development on the basis of Dickens’ influence. For the different ages and societies of the two, Lao She also keeps the style of localization on the basis of reference. Such as the different orientation of the using of humor, the different cultural background caused the lower classes have different features under Dickens and Lao She’s description.
