in the period of social transformation, the society of one country or one area is always blatant. when changes take on in the society circumstance, things are different from the past days in the aspect of economy, politic, and culture. especially when the advanced materials and concepts appear in people’s daily life, the young generation always has a strong individual sense and rebellion spirit towards the outdated idea, which conflicts to the social common moral norms. they express their dissatisfaction of the traditional dogma by rebellion activities or egocentric behaviors out of youth self-awareness.
take the united states for example, the 1960s was a turbulent time because the society was on transformation. the civil rights movement, the feminist movement, the sexual revolution, family disintegration, those events and social movements are all nearly all rose in that period, which have a profound influence on the united states history. the main force is young generation who have strong self-awareness. and american literary representative writer updike also in this period began to show his abilities. influenced by existentialism philosophy, updike's characters are unconsciously denied the world in which individual exist, but can't get rid of the effect of the objective world. consequently, the conflict between individual needs and social needs, personal instincts and social pragmatic contradictions become an eternal subject of updike's works. the short story a amp; p also continue to this topic.
john updike is widely considered to be one of the great american writers of his time. describing his subject as "the american small town, protestant middle class," updike was well recognized for his careful craftsmanship, his unique prose style, and his prolificity. updike populated his fiction with characters who "frequently experience personal turmoil and must respond to crises relating to religion, family obligations, and marital infidelity." his fiction is distinguished by its attention to the concerns, passions, and suffering of average americans; its emphasis on christian theology; and its preoccupation with sexuality and sensual detail. updike's highly distinctive prose style features a rich, unusual, sometimes arcane vocabulary as conveyed through the eyes of "a wry, intelligent authorial voice" that extravagantly describes the physical world, while remaining squarely in there a list tradition.

many young people sometime are confused by the disagree of the traditional social norms, especially in this age of booming information and networking technology. it is a common phenomenon in the social transformation period. american literary representative writer john updike is an acute observer of the human condition, his work aamp;p reflects the clash between the new and the old in america at his time. this paper is focus on the self-awareness of youth generation and the social moral values from the perspective of social transformation.
generally speaking, this paper will be divided into four parts. firstly, an introduction to the author and the novel. in this part, brief introduction to this novel will be shown. secondly, one of the themes of this novel will be presented and analyzed. in this part, the conflicts between youth individual sense and social standards, as well as the idealism and the reality in aamp;p will be discussed in detail. thirdly, the paper gives several suggestions to lessen the collision between youth self-awareness and social moral values, as well as the solution to generation gap. finally, the paper will form a natural conclusion, which will give a more general impression of the whole content to readers.
since relative researches and studies of the novel aamp;p are limited, the paper will consult bibliographies of the respective studies of this novel and some information about the youth self-awareness psychology and the cases of social moral standards. besides, based on text analysis, it carries out the problems between the rebellion of young generation and traditional social criterion. there are some practical suggestions for young generation to deal with the issue of generation gap. this will also be mentioned in the paper.
