african american women literature and feminist criticism, as a new feminist literary criticism school, is the most close class to the western feminist literary development path. the mainstream literary criticism dominated by white men and the feminist criticism of the middle class white women all ignored the black women writers. with the establishment and development of the black female writer, black female consciousness, black women and black women theme style, a black feminist literary criticism theory shaped, exploring the gender and race formed in black feminist literature in the obvious literary tradition. black feminist criticism not only studies the issues of race and gender in literary works, but also does research on the class, history and culture in its works.

in the 1970s, black literature ushered in a period of prosperity and development. alice walker and tony morrison, as representatives of black feminist literature, sold out their works since first published, began their brilliant literary career. rather than obeying a layer of social protest, they combined two kinds of traditional and linguistic features organically, enhancing the racial morality responsibility from different angles to the understanding of the meaning of life level. ultimately, these literary works were established in fusion to inspire the black female writer in their own unique way to reconstruct african american women literature and criticism genre.

in late 70s, afro american feminist criticism is considered to be the new energy center in the further development of the study of african american literature for its unique appearance in american feminist criticism. critics found and explain the positive images of black women as the theme of the construction of the black female action spirit appeared in black female literature. the color purple and sula, as part of black literature, are products of opposing the oppression of gender discrimination, racial discrimination and class discrimination.
