as a poet, autobiographer, novelist, playwright, essayist, folklorist, translator and writer of children’s books, langston hughes was one of the earliest innovators of a kind of poetry form called jazz poetry. he is best known as the leader of the harlem renaissance. during his literary career, he had created more than 50 volumes of works, and was titled as “shakespeare in harlem” and “the poet laureate of negro”. the jazz poetry of langston hughes had been noticed by many scholars who had produced a great amounts of research results. but rarely did the researchers tend to study langston hughes’ poetry over its poetic musicality such as rhythm, neither the relationship between langston hughes’ poetry and jazz music especially the function of jazz music to langston hughes’ poetry. they were inclined to explore the incentive of langston hughes creating so many jazz poems or the meaning of hughes’ jazz poetry to the arising of negro’s national awareness, rather than taking the concept of jazz poetry as the point of studying. as to china, the study of langston hughes is still at a starting point. yan han from liaoning normal university had wrote a paper called variation of jazz: a comparative study of langston hughes and amiri baraka’s view of african american music and the function of the arts. zhang jian from yunnan university has paper called the role of jazz music in langston hughes’ poetry. these two paper had focused on the function of jazz music on langston hughes’ poetry. but some foreign scholars had reached more particular field such as bitter jazz in langston hughes’ dream boogie written by rick brown and the riffs, runs, breaks, and distortions of the music of a community in transition": redefining african american modernism and the jazz aesthetic in langston hughes' montage of a dream deferred and ask your mama written by gü; nter h. lenz. the focus of attention of most domestic scholars were those renown writers who had got the nobel prize or other prizes. overall, the studying of langston hughes’ poetry from domestic and overseas is still remaining many vacancy to be researched.
this study is focusing on the rhythmic characteristics of langston hughes’ poems and intending to analyze the rhythm of langston hughes’ poems from the perspective of jazz music to explore the relationship between langston hughes’ poetry and jazz music. how jazz music affects lanston hughes’ poetry writing? how lanston hughes utilized jazz technique into his poetry writing? langston hughes was the pioneer who imported the jazz music in poetry firstly which had exerted great promotion to the development of american negro literary. he had been searching for the relationship between music and poetry during his whole literary career. he had utilized many techniques of jazz music into his poetry such as riff---the repetition of verse, staccato---a form of musical articulation with each sound or note sharply detached or separated from the others, holler---a loud cry or shout, which can be found in modern musical forms such as rap, hip-pop and ramp;b, improvisation---to invent a solo melody over certain chord progression and rhythm during performance.

the content of this paper will be structured mainly by four parts. the first part is introduction that will show the background, the purpose and the significance of this paper.
the second part is mainly about musical rhythm, in this paper which means the rhythm of jazz music, especially some rhythm feature relating to langston hughes’ poetry writing. the subtitle will be “rhythms in jazz music and in poetry”.
the third part of this paper will focus its attention on the analyzing of langston hughes’ selected poems. this part will analyzes the rhythmic characteristics of langston hughes’ some selected poems under the perspective of jazz music. the analyzing of theseis poems will be ordered by the specific techniques of jazz music, which includes riff, staccato, holler, improvisation and so on.
