as the winner of the nobel prize for literature in 1954, ernest miller hemingway, the value of life and death is the eternal theme in his literary creation, meanwhile, it is the reason that made him come out on top. therefore, the research on hemingway's death consciousness is the key to understand and analyze this great man. it is generally believed that hemingway's literary creation is closely connected with his legendary life. according to his life experience, especially the experience in the war, hemingway's exploration of life and death can be divided into three stages. in the first stage, hemingway thought that "he will never die", in this stage, hemingway was full of childlike innocence to death; the second stage is defined as "death and human", he believed that death is invincible, and he saw the weakness of human in the face of death, he thought that human can face up to death bravely, but they cannot overcome death; the third stage is "human and death", in this stage,hemingway believed that human can overcome death in mental to realize the value of life. the islands in the stream belongs to the third stage, in this novel,hemingway successfully created a character of hero, under the sufferings of both his body and mind, he never gave in and sticks to fight with life. although he failed to overcome death physically, but he made a detachment mentally. the change from "death and human" to "human and death" represents the change of hemingway's view of death consciousness. his thoughts of death had a far greater influence on the development of ideology and culture in america.

in china, the discussion of hemingway's death consciousness has been more and more intense. in hemingway's death consciousness, wu jianhua gave a point of view that “death is a kind of beauty”, hemingway has talked about his father’s death, he said: “ i love life more than ever, eventuality, i am seriously ill, i wish i could die rapidly, my father took his own life. when i was young, i thought he was a coward, but i learned to face death afterwards, death is a kind of beauty. but if you are alive, you should live in the best way, and enjoy your life.” in hemingway's philosophy of death, zhu li considered that “it seemed that the death consciousness talks about death, in fact, it talks about live.” people always try to analyze the death consciousness of hemingway from different aspects, such as philosophy and aesthetics, but these analyses have some same points:

this paper will make a case study of hemingway's death consciousness in the islands in the stream . and with this paper i want to have a certain understanding about hemingway's death consciousness .

firstly, i will finish reading of islands in the stream, wrote by ernest miller hemingway, as well as some other novels wrote by him in different stage. and in this way i can attain a rough understanding about his writing style and his death consciousness, which gives me the theoretical foundation for the following analysis.

afterwards, i’d like to read several different previous papers about hemingway's death consciousness and analyze the merits, i can take advantage of their methods of analyzing hemingway's death consciousness. this paper will try to analyze hemingway's death consciousness in three aspects:
