1. 研究目的与意义(文献综述)
as one of the most famous novelists in the american literature history, william faulkner excels in artistic expression, character creation and structural organization. his a rose for emily, an epitome of gothic style literature, has been appreciated and analyzed in the literary field both at home and abroad. impressed by the style and manner of writing this novel, a couple of chinese translators attempted to introduce it to chinese readership. for those different translation versions, such topics as translation motivations, translation styles, translation strategies, and translation techniques were once discussed by some researchers, during which the narrative art and narrative techniques of the original work were deeply interpreted, and in an instant comparison between different translated works were also conducted.yang qishen, a translator of a rose for emily, gained admiration from readers and researchers after his completion of translation. apart from him, yan linhai also tried to translate this work. first and foremost, they translated the name of the novel differently. in yang’s translation, “a rosy for emily” is translated as “纪念艾米丽的玫瑰”. and it is translated as “悲情玫瑰”in yan’s translation version. based on the current research, yang’s translation attracts a larger readership and has been studied more thoroughly than yan’s version.
as for the related research, yu zongchen studied yang’s translation version from the perspective of manipulation school. yu analyzed respectively the influence of three key elements of manipulation school, which are ideology, poetics and patronage on yang’s translation. xia guiqing and tan lixin claimed that yang’s success in translating this work should be ascribed to the full comprehension and their similarity in spirit.
as far as gothic style in the original work is concerned, it is always a heated topic among the researchers worldwide. the author intends to make an investigation into its representation in yang qishen’s translation.
2. 研究的基本内容与方案
contents and objectives:the paper aims to research the gothic style represented in yang qishen’s translation of a rose for emily. in general, the present paper is divided into five sections. first, it introduces briefly the novel a rose for emily and the gothic style in the original. in the second section, it describes the translated versions and related literature in china. the third,is devoted to the theoretical foundation of the present research, which is the skopos theory. it suggests that yang translated a rose for emily for a specific purpose, and analyzing his translation work in terms of gothic style representation could be greatly advanced with the aid of such a translation theory. the fourth section, which is the main part in the paper, would emphatically exemplify and explain the representation of gothic style in yang’s translation. in the final section, it summarizes the author’s viewpoints, states the significance of the present research, and points out its weakness. to carry out this study is meant to highlight the gothic features and their representations in translated works; meanwhile, to show how they are represented with solid evidence.
