1. 研究目的与意义(文献综述)

the chinese traditional culture is a great treasure house in which classical poetry is undoubtedly one of the most dazzling pearls. the book of poetry, as the source of chinese literature, is the earliest poetic anthology in china and occupies an important position in chinese traditional culture. it riveted the attention of poetry-lovers, scholars and researchers both in the east and west during the cultural exchange at the beginning stage, and it does to this day.

it is widely acknowledged that translating poetry is far more difficult than any other literary style. robert frost (1964) said: "poetry is what is lost in translation," which implies that translating poetry is an impracticable and impossible mission doomed to failure. according to robert bly (1984), " the translator is best to be a poet, having the experience of writing poetry; to experience the emotion of the poet and the atmosphere of the original poem." he suggested that a good translator is supposed to have at least two qualities: first, having the basic knowledge of writing a poem; second, having experienced what the original poet experienced before, otherwise the chance of producing a good translation work is rather slim. as hard as anyone can imagine, translating poetry across different languages and cultures never ceased throughout the translation history worldwide.

the translation activity of the book of poetry has a history of more than 300 years. in the early 18th century, william jones, who is a british sinologist, translated some poems in this anthology. in 1871, the first unabridged english version of the book of poetry was published, which was translated in prose by james legge. what’s more, this version was regarded as the “standard version” in the english world. after that, in the 20th century, arthur waley, xu yuanchong, and wang rongpei attempted to translate it into english. this paper aims at a comparative study of legge’s and wang rongpei’s translation version.
