1. 研究目的与意义（文献综述）

the initiation novel comes from the german word “bildungsroman”. it is a literary concept that cannot be defined and conceptualized in a simple way. “bildungsroman” describes the reform process of a person’s world view, especially, physiological changes in teenagers, who are affected by the environment of society, family, school and so on. everyone has very great changes in thought, personality and behavior because of the different experiences of the environment. the famous german literature expert, professor yang wuneng thinks, “bildungsroman originated in germany, has had a profound influence in europe and other places, and its subject matter content is rich and colorful, which even affects the generation after generation.” therefore, to analyze and study initiation novel is necessary.

a thousand splendid suns and the kite runner are both initiation novels written by hosseini. they both describe one or two main characters’ lives in the background of afghan. according to the main characters in the fictions, we can not only know their changes in mental but also know the social backgrounds of afghan. although they are just novels and characters that are nearly fabricated, it comes from lives in fact. thus, the more we know about war, politics, economy in afghan at that time, the more we will cherish the peace and safe now. what’s more, to understand the whole thing according to small perspective is also a common way in the novel.

researches on these novels have been don at home and abroad. rebecca stuhr introduced hosseini and his first two novels to the public in his book reading khaled hsseini in 2009. comments on these novels could be classified into two aspects.

2. 研究的基本内容与方案

the kite runner and a thousand splendid suns are written by the same writer khaled hosseini who is an afghan american. the background in two novels is similar—turmoil and war in afghan. the main characters (amir and mariam) in two novels have both experienced different stages in their growth, from innocent to maturity and gained salvation in the end. the theme of initiation is obvious in two novels. however, there are still many differences in details between amir and mariam. this paper makes a comparative study between the two novels by analyzing the influences of gender, war and culture on people from the perspective of initiation novel. the aim of this study is to find out the underlying reasons that may influence a person’s life. by comparing the two main characters in the novel, including background, family, relationship, gender, education, and experience, we can draw some conclusions that a person’s character and life can be influenced by those factors.
