1. 研究目的与意义(文献综述)
rebecca, as the best-selling work, established daphne du maurier’s fame as a writer. in 1930s, the time when women’s social status came to a dilemma, it wisely roused the self-consciousness of those lost females. though few chinese literary critics comment on it, its cultural value and practical significance constantly maintain vitality. in the plots, the narrator shifts her role in different stages. at the beginning, she serves as a maid accompanying an old lady. during the trip in monte carlo, she falls in love with maxim, and then she becomes a married woman and a lady of the upper class. after experiencing difficulties in life, she grows up as a strong female in the end. everything is told gently and flows fluently from the author's pen. besides the development of the story, the psychological changes during the roles-shifting process are worth exploring in the paper.
appreciating the novel rebecca that crosses the boundary between pure literature and popular literature, the scholars all over the world explored it from many perspectives. but over the past two decades, due to the thriving literary circles, many famous works take up the space of literary research. the overseas researches about rebecca recently are very few but interesting. one of them representatively regards the narrator as a second wife haunted by her predecessor's first initial r (robbins, dd, 2016), which is counted as the foundation of the symbolism in the novel. luckily, domestic scholars’ studies flourish on it. in the part of its language features, the figure of speech of the novel is explored from the perspective of aristotle's rhetoric theory (董晨, 2014). also, the translation of the metaphor in rebecca expands the language study of the novel in november (张琦,范祥涛,2014). in addition, owing to the social background of rebecca, a number of them study on it in terms of feminism and modernism. xu leilei analyzes the work in terms of feminist narratology(徐磊磊,2014). besides, gothic feminism is presented thoroughly in the thesis (吕晓丹,2015). as a literary work reflecting the society, it contains symbolism which are interpreted from the aspect of natural images (陈晨 ,2015). digging into the novel, some researchers focus on the vivid characters and the relationships between them. the analysis on the ex-mrs. rebecca develops smoothly, revealing the deep of her heart (游训花,2012). more researchers pay attention to contrast the female characters in different novels, evacuating and comparing the common and the different features(钱宁,2016). as for my paper, it will explore the work from the aspect of the narrator’s growth which has been analyzed purely by literary analysis(黄驰,2012) or according to maslow's hierarchy of human needs(李奎奎,2013). the innovation part of my paper is that it sees the traumatic experiences in the horrible story and utilizes trauma theory to analyze the symptoms and origins of them. moreover, the paper counts the recoveries after experiencing trauma as an important part to present. the paper aims to emphasize that the hurtful feelings brought by the narrator’s experiences can be relieved. in the novel, "i" am oppressed by poverty, social status and education level. the stereotypes from others mostly come from the reasons above. also, women’s right and freedom were limited in the novel which reflects the old british society’s tradition. in modern society, however, female’s stress is not less than the english women’s in 1930 represented by the narrator. additionally, trauma refers to the damage to a biological organism caused by physical harm from an external source. thanks to sigmund freud, pierre janet and joseph breuer, trauma has been associated with psychoanalysis treatments coping with the psyche damage inside. as time goes by, there emerged scores of traumatic novels ascribed to the fact that the masses worldwide have suffered the most miserable depress from the wars, revolutions and personal agonies. hence, trauma theory is accessible to literary studies, playing a substantial role in post-freudian psychological trauma theory.
based on all the information or standpoints reflected in these previous studies summarized above, and taking the whole evolution of the plot into consideration, it is possible to interpret the narrator’s growth profoundly with the application of trauma theory.
