from the 15^th century to now,western scholars have researched geoffrey chaucer systematically,including his attributions to english literature,the middle ages,humanism,love story,marriage life and so on.for example,the man from the university of south africa,retha knoetze,writes a paper exploring the ideas about marriage and the domestic sphere in the late middle ages in relation to the wife of bath's prologue and tale(retha knoetze,2015).and jeronimo mendez ,writes a paper about the bad behaviors of women in chaucer`s canterbury tales. while in china,there still lies in the initial stage of studying the great man.only a small number of monographs and papers have been written.and they mainly focus on the literature works,especially the language features of his works. thus one purpose of this paper is to appeal to the wider attention of chaucer and to stimulate the chinese scholars to do more valuable researches on geoffrey chaucer.at the same time,this paper aims to explore the ambivalence of chaucer`s view on women through the story: the wife of bath.

geoffrey chaucer,the most representative writer in the literary culture of the middle ages,was regarded as “the father of english poetry”because he changed the priority of french and latin and stimulated the language english even some london dialects used in literary works.apart from this,he invented the heroic couplets and was deemed to be one of the greatest writers in the history of english literature.

in his early stage of writing,he was deeply affected by italy and french literature and had no stable writing styles.most female characters in his early works were a bit idealistic.take the book of duchess as an example,both the black knights and his goddess were perfect in appearance,morality,personality and so on.
