1. 研究目的与意义（文献综述）

william golding, the winner of nobel prize of literature in 1983, is one of the most influential british writers. he was awarded the nobel prize for “his novel which, with the perspicuity of realistic narrative art and the diversity and universality of myth, illuminate the human condition in the world of today”. the famous british critics v. s. prichett regards golding as one of the most imaginative and creative writers. lord of the flies, his first novel as well as his masterpiece, rapidly became a world success and has so remained. it has reached readers who can be numbered in tens of millions and is today read in more than 35 languages. the novel was a philosophical fiction with its serious theme and it was regarded as “the model of contemporary british literature” by literary critics. though it had slow plot, simple dialogue and flat scene description, lord of the flies caused a great sensation among the readers and critics after its publication in 1954. e. m. forster thought that it was the most excellent novel of that year and he viewed it as beautifully written, tragic and provocative.

abroad, the study about golding is almost synchronous with his writing. a heated discussion was lunched as soon as lord of the flies was published. thus the study abroad has reached a relatively high level as for both the depth and the width. however, the study about golding and his works in china was not booming until he won the nobel prize of literature in 1983. scholars and critics both at home and abroad have done their researches particularly from the following perspectives, such as theme, symbolism, comparative and contrastive study, myth archetype, the absence of female, psychological study, etc. for example, in 1992, patrick reilly analyzed this novel from the perspective of feminism in lord of the flies: fathers and sons. he hold that the absence of female was a horrible omission. in 1985, neil mcewan made a comparative and contrastive study on lord of the flies and the coral island. in china, sun yanjie evaluated the multiple themes of the novel. wang yanxing and gong xuan analyzed the novel through the ideas of freud and jung.

literary critics and scholars have studied it from almost every perspective. among these studies, there are also innovative ideas. however, many perspectives still need to be studied deeply and thoroughly. taking a panoramic view of the sixty-year researches, the author of this paper finds that there are few researches giving a general analysis of piggy in this novel alone. scholars and critics don’t pay enough attention to piggy in lord of the flies. thus the author tries to provide a relatively comprehensive study on piggy and figure out the significance of the character.

2. 研究的基本内容与方案

the paper focuses on the analysis of the character piggy in golding's lord of the flies. the arrangement of this paper is as follows. firstly, there will be an introduction to the author william golding as well as the novel. in this part, the literary status of william golding and his major works will be included. besides, brief introduction to the plot of this novel will be shown. secondly, the body of this paper consists of three parts. they are the archetypal study of piggy and other objects or images related to him, analysis of the relationship between piggy and other boys, and the tragedy of piggy's death. thus, the detail information about piggy will be presented and the reason of piggy's tragic death will be explored. thirdly comes the conclusion part. the whole paper will be summarized from several perspectives. in more than sixty years after the novel was published, the theme, symbolism in the novel, the characters like simon, ralph, have been discussed by many scholars. they paid little attention to the indispensable character---piggy. the aim of this paper is to analyze the novel from a relatively new perspective and help readers to understand the significance of piggy in this novel.
