Scene Construction of Imperfection: Pirates of the Caribbean

1 Introduction

The film series Pirates of the Caribbean begins its journey in 2003 with Pirates of the Caribbean1: The Curse of the Black Pearl. The series has five films in the past 14 years, with Pirates of the Caribbean2: Dead Man’s Chest and Pirates of the Caribbean4: On Stranger Tides grossed more than 1 billion. The series is obviously a good entertainment work for the audience and high box office return for the producer. At the same time, it has also attracted the research attention of relevant scholars:

Wang Kun and Xu Ying (2007) analyzed the reasons for the movie’s popularity from the perspectives of pirate culture, magic elements, comedy elements, protagonist charm and special effects (Wang amp; Xu, 2007). The mainstream American values hidden behind the film was analyzed in Pirates of the Caribbean and the Cultural Hegemony (Liang amp; Zhang amp; Bian, 2009).

Cai Ling (2010) looked in to the film dialogues and its practical effects from the perspectives of speech act theory, cooperative principle and politeness principle (Cai, 2010). Yang Fei (2011) studied the commercial success of the movie from grand scene setting, star effect and suspense setting (Yang, 2011).

In Interpretation of Magic Realism in Pirates of the Caribbean4, Li Chun (2013) revealed the realistic nature under the surface of "magic" (Li, 2013). The research focused on essence of humor elements from the perspectives of plot, subject and object of the movie was by Que Lei and You Longpian (Que amp; You, 2013).

Zhou Hui (2014) explored qualities conveyed in the film from the aspects of ideal and reality, freedom and responsibility (Zhou, 2014). Guo Lina (2014) analyzed the hero image construction in The Analysis of Addition kind of Hero in American Movie Pirates of the Caribbean (Guo, 2014).

Liu Xiaorong (2016) interpreted the movie from the perspective of magical realism that reflects human nature of contemporary society (Liu, 2016). Sun Hongyuan (2016) analyzed the narrative structure of Pirates of the Caribbean4 by Greimasin model and semantic square model (Sun, 2016).

As to research on Pirates of the Caribbean5, Sun Zongjian (2017) carried out aesthetic analysis from the aspects of character composition, background setting, theme, story interpretation, historical research and multi-level art design (Sun, 2017). Zhou Zhou, Wu Weifeng (2018) analyzed the creative features of Hollywood movies from the mature and serialized production of Hollywood movies, the compromise between individual works and series works, the compromise between art and business (Zhou amp; Wu, 2018). Wang Ying (2018) interpreted the aesthetic appeal of film from legendary language, narrative baseline of justice and humanistic standpoint of embracing truth (Wang, 2018).

It can be concluded from the above research results, the academic research in Pirates of the Caribbean largely focuses on the study of aesthetic construct, value orientation, characteristics of commercialization, analysis of the content, mainly based on magic realism, pragmatics and semiotics. The characteristics of postmodernism in films are not analyzed from the perspective of scene construction. This paper will make a systematic analysis of Pirates of the Caribbean based on scene theory and postmodernism theory, so as to make up for the deficiency of research in this field.
