Differences and Causes of Chinese and Western Educational Views——A Case Study of Little Joy and Young Sheldon

Introduction

Youth is the future of a country and the hope of a nation. Education is indispensable to the success of teenagers. The education of young people is not only the book knowledge taught by teachers in school, but also the views that parents pass on to their children through their behaviors and words at home. Moreover, parents are the first people that children come into contact with and the first teachers that children learn from.Dewey, a famous American educator, once said, “parents are their children’s first teachers, so they have the strongest and far-reaching influence on their children’s lives. They are on the front lines of providing values, forming attitudes and giving advice.” Zhao zhongxin, a famous family educator in China, also said: “family education in a broad sense is a kind of family education implemented by family members. In a narrow sense, family education refers to the education and influence of parents on their children and other young people.”Therefore, parents' educational view plays a very important role in the growth and development of children. Every parent has their own educational view, but generally speaking, the education of parents in the same country usually share the similar view. In most cases, the differences in the concept of family education are mainly caused by the different growing environments of parents. It is not surprising that Chinese and western parents have very different ideas about education. Differences can be reflected not only in daily life, but also through film and television works. As the saying goes, art comes from life. With which they actually treat their children, the family educational views of Chinese and Western parents are basically the same as the family educational views shown in film and television works. This article aims to find out the differences between Chinese and Western family educational views by analyzing two TV series Little Joy and Young Shelton that typically depict the views of Chinese and Western educational methods. This paper aims to find out the differences between Chinese and western family educational views by analyzing two TV series Little Joyand Young Sheldon that typically depict the views of Chinese and Western family education, and analyze the reasons for these differences from some aspects.

Little Joy and Young Sheldon

This Chinese TV series called Little Joy focuses on the group of “Senior High School Students”, which mainly talks about the children’s senior high school learning life, family life trivia and parents' educational views in three families. What we have to admit is that the family environment formed by parents is an important factor that affects a child's physical and mental health and development.

Little Joy mainly presents three typical Chinese family education concepts for us. Fang Yuan and Tong WenJie represent a harmonious family. In education, mothers strictly demand children, and father treats children gently. Qiao Wei-dong and Song Qian represent single-parent families. The lack of father's love, the blending of father and his girlfriend, and the mother's desire to control make a child who is already fragile in heart become more and more unhappy and gradually become depressed. Ji Shengli and Liu Jing represent left-behind families. There are also many parents who must be separated from their children because of various reasons, and they also have problems of neglecting their children’s growth and separating themselves from their children.

Fang Yuan and Tong Wenjie are a very loving couple.Although Fang Yuan is frustrated at work, he has a high EQ in education and getting along with children. Tong has high expectations for her son and is eager to see her son become successful. The purpose of her education is to see her son enter a good university and own a higher platform for growth than his peers. They have a son named Fang Yifan. He is the happiest children in the play. Although Fang Yifan is scolded by his mother for his academic achievements because he is facing a college entrance examination, he still grows up healthily. The family of Fang Yuan and Tong Wenjie is typical of contemporary China with enlightened family educational views. Their family education point of view is that children’s physical and mental health is more important than good academic performance. They want their children to progress in learning, but they will also listen to their children’s opinions and allow them to relax and play properly.

Qiao Weidong and Song Qian’s daughter Yingzi grows up in an incomplete family due to divorced parents. Yingzi’s life plan is completely controlled by her mother from an early age. As the parent of high school seniors, Song Qian also puts intelligence education in the first place in family education. She thinks nothing is more important than a child's study. She sets the goal of getting into TsingHua University and Peking University without asking about her daughter’s opinion , and help her daughter set a specific college entrance examination score target: over scores. As long as her daughter complained a little, Song would say,“Everything I do is for your own good.”Her daughter Yingzi is very interested in astronomy, and her favourite university is the department of astronomy at Nanjing university. However, when Yingzi asked to attend the summer camp at Nanjing University, she refused to sign her daughter’s application. Song Qian’s high expectations of her daughter and her strong desire to control her daughter are like a true portrayal of many families in China who have the idea of "hope one's children will have a bright future". So although Yingzi’s family conditions are superior in the play, everyone in the family is not really happy.

Ji Shengli and Liu Jing’s son Ji Yangyang is typical left-behind children who grows up with his uncle. He grows up in the doting care of his elders. His uncle tries his best to meet his requirements. When he got his driver’s license at the age of eighteen, his uncle granted him a very expensive car. Because of work, his parents miss the most important years of his growth and make Yangyang rarely disciplined and restrained. Ji Yangyang has no clear plan for his future and no interest in learning.
