Abstract

As people in China pay more and more attention to children's education and environmental protection, it is urgent to study the E-C translation of foreign children's literature and the E-C translation of the environmental description. Under the guidance of eco-translatology, this thesis chooses The Secret Garden as an object of case study to study the E-C translation of environmental descriptions in children's literature through comparing Li Wenjun’ and Zhang Jianping’ translations of The Secret Garden, and the thesis mainly focuses on two versions’ adaptation to translational eco-environment and multi-dimensional adaptive selection of the translation so as to give some suggestions about the E-C translation of environmental descriptions in children's literature for translators and arouse children’ interests towards children’ literature and environmental protection. This paper consists of five chapters. Chapter One is introduction, mainly introducing the background, purpose, and significance of the research. Chapter Two is the literature review, which principally summarizes the researches on the translation of children's literature and the translation of environmental descriptions by famous scholars at home and abroad. Chapter Three is the theoretical framework, expounding the important views of eco-translatology and its application in the study of the translation of the environmental descriptions in children's literature. A Study on the E-C Translation Strategies of Environmental Descriptions in Children's Literature——A Case Study of Two Chinese Translations of The Secret Garden

1 Introduction

Nowadays, the trend of cultural exchanges and mutual learning is irresistible in the world. Children not only enjoy a large number of excellent domestic children's literature works, but also have access to remarkable foreign children's literature works from different cultural backgrounds, which are conducive to expanding children's horizons and adapting them to the increasingly interconnected and culturally diverse world. Under such circumstances, it is necessary to study the translation of foreign children's literature to make it more advisable for Chinese children to absorb and learn. However, the research on children's literature translation in China started later than that in other countries, and the theoretical research on children's literature translation gradually augmented since Xu Derong’ On the Translation of Children’s Literature has published in 2004. But most researches on children's literature translation took a whole book as an object. There is little detailed research on it.

In addition, in recent years, due to the progressively severe environmental pollution and resource shortage, the relationship between mankind and the environment has received extensive attention. It is of great importance to cultivate children's affection towards nature and establish the concept of environmental protection in their mind through the descriptions of the environment in children's literature, especially the descriptions of scenery, to ensure the sustainable development of China. That is to say, a special study on the translation of environmental description in foreign children's literature is imperative.

However, which theory is suitable for exploring this field? On the one hand, as Children's literature are always based on children, Professor Hu Gengshen’s theory of translation as Adaptation and Selection in Eco-translatology enable foreign children's literature better adapt to the domestic children's readers in the translation process. On the other hand, since the natural ecology of novels constituted by the description of the environment in children's literature and its translational ecology are both concerned with “ecology”, there must be certain echoes between them, which provides a novel angle to study the description of the environment. In conclusion, eco-translatology is of great guiding significance in the study of the translation of environmental descriptions in children's literature. Then, in terms of the selection of case study, as a renowned children's literature works with massive environmental descriptions, The Secret Garden, written by Frances Hodgson Burnett, an American writer, which demonstrates the relationship between man and nature in various aspects, becomes an appropriate research object.

Under the guidance of the theory of Eco-translatology, this study has conducted plentiful analyses and comparative studies on the environmental descriptions in two Chinese versions of The Secret Garden from the theory of translation as Adaptation and Selection and the perspective of “three-dimensional” principles of culture, language and communication, aiming to summarize the features of the two Chinese versions and obtain the strategies and methods for the Chinese translation of children's environmental descriptions in children's literature.

2 Literature Review

2.1 Previous Studies of Translation of Environmental Descriptions

Through searching on CNKI, the author found that the earliest research on the E-C translation of environmental descriptions appeared in the journal article "the translation of the description sentences of characters and environment" published by Liang Jinxiang in Chinese Translators Journal in 1987. According to the author's statistics, 8 journal articles and master's theses with this research direction have appeared successively since then, among which there are 4 journals and 4 master's theses. It can be seen that the time and achievements of Chinese translation of environmental descriptions are not long and there is still a lot of room for research. In the following part, I will review and study the 9 articles about the environment in total.
