A Comparative Study of Translation Strategy of Financial News from the Perspective of Medio-translatology
-with Case Studies on Financial Times and China Daily
1 Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Medio-translatology is a translation theory studying from the perspective of comparative literature. As the first person in China who introduced the concept of Medio-translatology, Xie Tianzhen questioned traditional translation concepts and research methods, and established a theoretical system of Medio-translatology.
As early as 2008, Xie Tianzhen began to publish articles about Chinese literature and put emphasis on the idea of “Chinese culture going global” (Xie, 2016). However, the existing researches have found out that the domestic translation circle is accustomed to emphasizing "Chinese characteristics", without paying much attention to the universal law of translation strategies. To be more specific in the English-Chinese translation, the Chinese characteristic is manifested as “Translationese”, which is the major problem affecting the quality of translation (Chen, 2019).
Eugene Nida, an American linguistic, first put forward the word “Translationese” in The Theory and Practice of Translation. According to Nida (2004), Translationese means formal fidelity, with resulting unfaithfulness to the content and the impact of the message. In addition, here is another definition of “Translationese” in Dictionary of Translation Studies: a general pejorative term used to refer to TL usage which because of its obvious reliance on features of SL is perceived as unnatural impenetrable or even comical (Shen, 2018). From the definition of Translationese, we can see that Translationese is a problem that translators should overcome. Since translation is a common cultural exchange of all mankind, it has its own internal law. However, Translationese ignores the universal law of translation.
In recent years, an obvious trend in western translation studies is to explore translational norms and translational universals, emphasizing the transformation from local to global. (Liao, 2019) In the past few years, people adhere to the idea that the translation works in China are full of strong Translationese, and translators have overlooked the reading and language habits of the target readers, which is obviously against the trend of the academic community of translation studies in the world. Xie Tianzhen clearly pointed out that blindly emphasizing "Chinese characteristics" may lead to the rejection of introduction of advanced translation theories (Xie, 2001).
Therefore, this paper conducts a comparative study of translation strategy in two different news media to see whether the translation of financial news has the problem of Translationese.
1.2 Financial News Media
Financial news, a type of professional news, appeared with the advent of capital market. Financial news keeps to the market value regulation and focuses on the economic benefits as the report essence (Yang, 2014). In order to study whether Chinese translation works in financial news field have the problem of Translationese, it is necessary to choose proper financial news media to collect materials.
There are plenty of famous financial news media at home and abroad. Based on the above background study, this paper selects China Daily, one of the largest bilingual newspaper media in China, to do the research. In addition, by taking Financial Times as the research object as well, this paper makes a comparative study of the translation strategy between them. As Financial Times and China Daily are from different cultural backgrounds, they are accessible to distinctive target audiences.
These two types of news media are both bilingual daily newspapers, the information in which is received by both Chinese-speaking and English-speaking readers. These two newspapers are committed to providing timely business, economic, market, management and technology news from all over the world to readers. At the same time, these two media report and comment on the ins and outs of the economic situation, as well as events that are truly significant and influential to China's economy and global business.
In order to cater for different target users, different translation strategies are used to deal with the contents in the source texts. Therefore, it is representative and authoritative to excerpt source texts from these two news media.
2 Translation Strategies
In order to achieve better information exchanges in cross-cultural communication, translation strategies play an important role in the translation process. By collecting materials and analyzing the translation strategies of the two newspapers analyzed above, we can find out the degree of transmission and acceptance of two types of media with different audiences in the new cultural context. In addition, we can also draw people’s attention to the role of translators in different cultural backgrounds in the whole process of translation. Therefore, translators always give top priority to translation strategies.
