1.Introduction
As Thackeray’s masterpiece, Vanity Fair described an unique female character Becky Sharp. From the analysis to Becky’s life experience and social environment, it could be affirmed that Thackeray had created a character which out of the ordinary, especially at the time when criticism was rampant. Compared with criticism, existentialism is centered on human beings, it respects the personality and freedom of human beings. It is believed that man lives in a meaningless universe, and the existence of man himself has no meaning, but he can make it and live well on the basis of existence (Sartre 187). Becky Sharp is the portrayal of this spiritual concept in a way. Thackeray affirmed that Becky dared to challenge the customs in the era of Victorian. Thackeray’s attitude towards Becky is mainly sympathy and appreciation, although he does not quite agree with some of Becky’s behaviors. In this work, Becky desperately wanted to go into the metropolis of London, to find a good state for herself in this flamboyant world, to show off herself, to achieve fame and wealth. At the same time, she was also an independent woman who pursuing freedom. She wanted to present herself and accomplish self-fulfillment on this magnificent stage. However, it represented revolt and some things immoral in the patriarchal society at that time. Therefore, the road to success in this ideal does not exist. In the culture which was dominated by men, the soul of Becky was distorted. She kept on marching into the so-called upper class with all strength, and forgot the true feelings and friendliness. Money and rights were her only pursuit. However, Becky knew clearly that if she did not leave the country to live in London, she could not really enter the upper class. London was a symbol of the upper class in her mind. Entering London seemed to have entered the upper class. She thought that she could not be more stupid or contemptible than these people in any way, and her wisdom and beauty surpassed all of these people, and she tried her best to make the society accept her.
