the successful translation of mo yuan’s works has played an important role in his winning the nobel prize in literature. the main engine translator of his works is the american sinologist ——howard goldblatt. he is currently the world’s most important chinese literature translator, who has translated more than ten works of mo yan to english readers. the noticeable features of his translation works are the abridgment and rewriting.
goldblatt adopted “ reader — oriented ” strategy as his translation principle. he has greatly played the translator’s subjectivity. this paper, based on such factors as ideology, gushing sentimentalism, cultural background and story rhythm, explores the translation characteristics of red sorghum from lexical, sentential, discourses, textiles aspects.
