Abstract
In the great era of globalization and information explosion, the immediacy which is the prominent characteristic of news makes Journalistic Hot Words (JHWs) be widely disseminated in real-time news and always catch the public attentions. Translation, as the medium of conveying information among different languages, has practical significance in the dissemination of JHWs. Therefore, it is vital to employ appropriate translation strategies, methods and techniques in translating JHWs.
This paper studies the application of domestication and foreignization in Journalistic Hot Words Translation through the case analysis from the perspective of Skopos Theory. The journalistic hot words are collected from the second edition of China Daily Journalistic Hot Words renewed in 2017 and also from the China Daily bilingual news website (2017-2018). The paper analyzes the translation strategies employed in journalistic hot words translation (JHWs translation), concludes translation methods and techniques and compares the usage and effect of translation strategies. The study finds that foreignization and its relevant methods and techniques are adopted more frequently than the others in JHWs translation. According to the findings, the relevant conclusion is drawn that translators tend to employ the strategy of foreignization in JHWs translation in order to ensure the adequacy of translation and to keep the original Chinese characteristics.

On the English Translation of Journalistic Hot Words from the Perspective of Skopos Theory
1 Introduction
Along with acceleration of globalization and increases in cultural exchanges, Journalistic Hot Words (JHWs) in news have been more widely spread both domestically and abroad. Because JHWs take most essential role to transfer the country’s new trends of political and social issues, the precise translation of JHWs is much more demanding than before. What’s more, as authentic and effective English learning materials, accurate translation of JHWs is valuable to English learners, especially to translators themselves. Actually, JHWs, such as political, juristic or economic words have already formed definite translations, the translation strategies, methods and techniques which have adopted in translation of JHWs will help translators to handle with the new words much easier.
Quite a few researches on journalistic text translation or hot words translation can be found. Overseas researchers focused on journalistic text translation more than JHWs translation. Many scholars studied the role of culture in journalistic text translation, such as its importance and strategies to keep cultural style in journalistic texts translation; some researchers concentrated on the application of specific translation strategies, methods or techniques, such as domestication, trans-editing and hedging devices. Domestic researchers pay more attention to journalistic text translation than hot words translation as well. Some researchers even studied translation techniques solely. Such translation theories, like Relevance Theory, the Functional Equivalence Theory and the Skopos theory are discussed at most in academic papers. Almost no one study the translation of JHWs systemically. It should be noted that people hardly distinguish the category of strategy, method and techniques. For example, in an academic paper, the main study issue is variation translation which relates to translation method, but the academic term “translation method” might be defined as a translation technique in the paper.
Although some researches try to study the translation of JHWs, the collected research data may be unconvincing for its limited resources. Yet some studies have used Skopos Theory to research translation of journalistic texts or translation of hot words in different research perspective, for instance, in English Translation of Chinese Social Soft News Viewed from Skopos Theory-- A Case Study of the Bilingual News from China Daily, Xu Jielin studied the translation of social soft news and put forward C-E translation methods mainly on dealing with cultural elements and linguistic characteristics(Xu, 2015); another representative, Zhu Yanfen has put forward four translation techniques of political news translation based on practices of translating Global Times in E-C Translation of Political News Text from Global Times in the Skopos Perspective(Zhu,2017). Furthermore, scholars like Jiang Yue has classified the JHWs into three types and summarized translation techniques of hot words translation from the initial public speeches of Chinese Foreign Minister(Jiang,2016). The mentioned studies focused on solving awkward translation problems in journalistic texts translation or hot words translation and provided valuable suggestions for the development of translatology as well as for the translation practices of translators.
This paper systemically studies translation strategies, methods and techniques of JHWs translation from the perspective of the Skopos Theory. JHWs are usually extracted from news on current events and social hot spots, which cover all aspects of social phenomenon, and are unexpected well received by ordinary people, thus the appropriate translation of JHWs is very demanding in broadcasting. The Skopos Theory defines translation as a purposeful activity, that is to say, the function of the target text, i.e. the function of JHWs must be considered primarily in the translating activity. In other words, under The Skopos Theory, the knowledge, social values and culture background of the readers or audiences would influence the translators’ translating whether do literal translation or adaption.
